Frostbite Run in spring - GS Trophy 2019
« on: September 09, 2019, 08:19:38 am »
A few months ago, @Ghato convinced me to join him at the GS Trophy to be held in Dullstroom. At the time I was hesitant for several reasons.
Most importantly:
- I did not own a BMW at the time and would have to use one of his bikes.
- I know the area very well and have ridden almost all of the routes countless times.

I ended up buying an HP2 again a while ago so first problem sorted.

Lunchtime Thursday we were ready to roll. I had planned a mostly dirt trip to Dullstroom which would see us arriving  there late afternoon

The weather forecast looked ominous and my limited packing space on the HP2 meant that I did not pack enough warm clothes for the weekend.

We hopped onto dirt on the outskirts of town and managed a good pace to Sudwala caves. Weltevreden road through Wonderkloof. The fesh-fesh was so deep that it felt like riding through deep water in spots. Ghato, riding to my left and just behind my back wheel would disappear in a cloud of dust every we hit a deep patch.

It was almost impossible to get past logging trucks and I had a couple of close calls doing  just that.

We reached the top of the climb and temps dropped dramatically.

From Lydenburg we took R36 towards Kwena dam for a few km and then back on dirt, riding more or less parallel to the R36. Eventually we turned West towards the Wilgekraalspruit and then over the Wilgekraal Pass. The cold front was rolling in and the scenery was absolutely spectacular.

We arrived in Dullstroom registered at the venue, booked into our accommodation and then back to the venue for supper and all the presentations.

BMW events are always very well organised!

We had a late night out with some other riders and when I woke the next morning, I had a flat rear tyre which did not want inflate because we couldn't get the bead to seal  :xxbah:

It was miserably cold and wet and I was already contemplating staying in town for the day.......But I promised I would sweep the Black route with Chris and that meant I had to make a plan!

Eventually used the BMW workshop tools and got the tyre inflated. Thank you Chris!
