Retro Roof of Africa 2019

This looks interesting. Basically seems like it can accommodate any bike that can go on dirt.

edit: Although a pity it is the same weekend as Tankwa. ...why not grow the sport in SA instead of having competing events?  :patch:

I was looking at going up to that event until I noticed the date clash. I mentioned it on their FB page as well. Real pity because it will probably be a great ride. I see it's MSA registered as well so they cocked it up by double booking the weekend  :(

Interesting to see this name on the start list, I thought he had left the country after the Rally fiasco :imaposer:

George Booker    N/A N/A    Adventure Bikes Under 1000cc    KTM 530 Rally Lite

Ja it looks like a fun event. I'm gearing myself up, mostly i.t.o. saving money to do one or two events next year. Tankwa obviously being #1, if this is around next year on a different date then maybe this will be #2.

Why does the name imply "retro" when Booker for instance, is on a newish 530?

The Retro Roof is on the 21st March this year. I'm thinking of doing this on the 790, can anyone comment on this that did the event last year?

Dan,  the modern "Roof" (last 10years) has become increasingly technical. The "Retro" refers to the original type of "Roof" where the tracks were less technical.
So the format for the Retro Roof is easier, more open (even side by sides and 4x4 buggies/sandmaster type vehicles can enter) and doable by average skilled riders.
They are also trying to get the "old toppies" that used to ride the Roof back in the day to enter.
The first Retro Roof (last year) was a huge success and I think the organizers has got a winning formula.

If you're in the area, Healthworx in Randpark Ridge, quick and cheap. Think I paid R800 for mine.

I sure hope the event is still going to be on. I thought only international air travel was suspended but apparently borders are closed!

We did this last year on 300 2-T's.

Actually we booked a Lesotho Roof training long-weekend for that weekend on the 300's, only to find out closer to the time that the Retro Roof is the same date, so we decided 'what the heck let's do this event while we are in Lesotho', and then the rest of the remaining days we will continue with the technical riding.

It was a lot of fun, old bikes, and new, not really a race but more an event, although the front runners, as in any event, gunned it to the end.

Dally, from Pongola Dirt Zone organiser of the annual Pongola 500, who is extremely capable on bikes to put it mildly, did it with a 1290 with his young laaitie as pillion, 790 can easily do it yes...
