Fun in the Sun after near death Experience!
« on: September 18, 2019, 02:46:39 pm »
In early July, after riding past the back of Wagondrift Dam, near Wembezi, I was ambling along at a relaxed 70km/h when a mad cow bolted out the low bank from behind a tree.... It was all over before I could even process the thought!

After feeling very very sorry for myself for the next few days, and beaten blue in many areas, I realised I actually escaped very lightly, by the grace of God! Although badly bruised, I did not suffer one abrasion, testament to good protective wear!

At my wife urging, (bless her soul!!) I started looking for another bike. I wanted something with less than 5000km, and in line with the offload riding we do, so it boiled down to a 1200GS water-cooled, or a Super Adventure R. The KTM made the most sense, as I already had panniers, brackets and many other KTM specific things,.... Plus I really like the poke of the 1290.... nothing quite like it!! (cows not withstanding!)

More to follow...

Soooooo.... I finally found what I was looking for, 1290 Super Adventure R, 4200km,  and some extras , however, the problem was it was in Springbok. After negotiating with the seller, he transported the bike to KTM Cape Town. The decision was now whether to transport it up (cheaper) or ride it back.

Both my wife and I have been trying for years to get to ride in the Western Cape, so this seemed like a good opportunity to actually do this. Both of us have our own businesses, so getting time off to ride, other than week ends is very tough!

We booked our flight, and, after a 2.30 am alarm to make it to Durban by 6.00 am, we were on our way.

Once we landed, it was a quick Uber to KTM and there she was!!

Our first stop after negotiating the madness of Cape Town, and the N2 to Somerset West was Gordons bay.

Glad to see that you are OK after hitting the mad cow and that you were able to get another bike accompanied with a great adventure riding it back home  :thumleft:

Looking forward to see your trip

Did you at least get some biltong off the cow for the trouble she caused. Glad to know both you and yours are riding again. Regards Keith Miller ;D

I would rather fall a thousand times, and keep riding, than to stop riding and never fall

I was so angry with that cow I could easily have taken a nice fillet! But I was in a world of pain, and all I wanted to do was get home!!

After Gordons Bay we took the coastal route to Hermanus via Betty's Bay, a route I have been wanting  to do for years. There was not much traffic, and we were able to enjoy the scenery, and to take it easy, just enjoying it all! Once over towards Betty's Bay, we started encountering a strong side wind, something that would stay with us almost until Montague.

The evidence of the recent fires in the area was very real, with massive scars in the vegetation, and a few burned out houses here and there. After a stop on the road just outside Betty's bay, our next stop was Hermanus, where, suddenly, we were hungry, and wandered around Hermanus looking for a steakhouse. Eventually we found what we were looking for, but, by the time we finished lunch it was 3pm, and this put our plans of going to L'Agulhas, to see the southern most tip of Africa. This is still on our bucket list, and so makes an excellent excuse for another trip someday....

Our destination for the night was Montague, still around 150km away, so we set off without further ado. Once on the road to Riviersonderend we encountered a really strong sidewind... so strong that the peak on my helmet acted like a weathervane to turn my head sideways with the gusts.... I have never encountered a wind like this before!!!

Once off the N2 and over the first mountain range we were in the Little Karoo, and here we stoped to rest our backsides from KTM's special brand of granite that they call a seat... we have a standing joke between ourselves about this, and its always interesting to see how long we can endure the KTM granite before we have to rest.... I will have to get a better, more comfortable seat!!!

After the rest stop we rode past Bonnivale and then turned right onto the R62 just after Ashton, where we crossed the next mountain range, which puts Montague into the area officially known as the Great Karoo.

We found our Guest House quite easily and settled in for the night.... the next day would be quite a long one, routing through George, (and stopping off to see family) and then the old Bloukraans pass, and on to Jeffries bay.
