R200k - buy a bicycle or KTM 790R
« on: October 22, 2019, 01:24:43 pm »
In 2004 I sold my like new 1150 GS and bought a bicycle. Stupid I know, but after an off one Sunday morning, my heavily pregnant wife said she’s not raising kids alone........ That was it......For the next roughly 8 years I was bicycle mad...... until I fractured 2 vertebra in my back while training on rollers at home. That was the end of cycling for me ......

A few acquaintances have started cycling - specifically e-bikes. This morning I checked out a few options...... maybe start working on my fitness again.....

R200k buys you a Specialized SWorks road bike or a KTM 790R.

Ridiculous!

Totally ridiculous, I have discussed this with many people and no one can give me a good reason why bicycles are so overpriced.

I remember you and I driving with the HP2 and the 690 on a trailer with a bakkie in front of us carrying 2 bicycles and you said those bicycles are worth more than our motorcycles. That stuck with me. Someone also told me a while back that some cycle stores now have on site F&I. Not only are people financing their bicycles but enough people are doing it to justify having someone permanently on site to handle it. Madness

i'm all for having nice toys - but on the bicycle front you can do a lot (loose weight, exercise more, ride more regularly, etc) that will improve your riding more than dropping mega $$$ on a bicycle

i'm the limitation on my bicycles - my bicycles are not holding me back, i'm holding them back  ;D

I agree that the prices are mal, but maybe it's like buying a s1000rr hp.......the bicycle probably has carbon tyres  :imaposer: etc so if you have deep pockets, why not?

I bought a fairly basic full suspension e-bike and almost had a stroke when i realized what they cost. Plus side is I now ride trails where before there was no chance i would manage a normal bike due to my total lack of fitness.

I was just thinking, your wife said she is not raising kids alone but she let you ride a bicycle on the road? I know almost as many people who have had serious accidents on a bicycle as a motorbike. I would rate them just as dangerous.

Tankwa entry depending on the class R2500 - R6800

Kahalari Rally , R36k for a bike and service crew if you racing, R26k if you not competing but just with a GPS

Bicycle stage races cost a packet too.  Bicycle tyres cost more than a car tyre :(

They are just $#@$ crazy with their prices, there really is no way to justify charging what they do, especially when you consider most of the carbon fiber frames come out the same factory and are just re-badged differently (bar a few bespoke builders). I do both sports and I refuse to spend more on a mtb than on a dirt bike. Luckily if you're not a total brand whore you can still pick up decent mtb's secondhand for reasonable prices. A mate of mine just invested in 2 x Spez ebikes for him and his missus... a cool R280K plus  :o

The 3 day Wine2Whales mtb event costs around R14K... Alfie's 3 day Matat2Pont cost R5K and included a lot more bang for buck like sponsored clothes etc. It's ludicrous.
Present bikes: BETA 300RR, KTM 690, Yamaha WR250F

If you're dumb you gotta be tough !!!

Each to his own.

The guys driving cars can't see the logic behind spending R300k on a bike and then taking it into uncharted territories  :deal:

Funny you should mention the price of tyres.. A chain costs more than a motorbike chain as well.

The worst part about buying an expensive bicycle is that the moment you wheel it out of the shop, the value drops by half.  At my local pawn shop is a Specialized Tarmac Pro with a full 10 speed Dura Ace groupset for R16 000. In 2014 it was selling for R100 000. I have never sold a motorcycle for less than 75% of what I paid for it and my record is 4X what I paid.
Why do things that only happen to stupid people always happen to me?
