In general roadies have a much worse second-hand value than MTBs. I would never ever buy a roady new. There are way too much good roadies on the second hand market. We have lots of cycles, and the most expensive one is my son's Scalpel Si, and only because he does competitive MTBing.

For the average cyclist, a MTB in the R30k - R50k would be more than good enough.

Totally ridiculous, I have discussed this with many people and no one can give me a good reason why bicycles are so overpriced.

With the interest in cycling - if you donít pay somebody else does - demand effectively equals supply.- suppliers name their absurd prices and in most instances get it from buyers who believe an upgrade will fundamentally improve their Wine to Wales and or Argus times . Hysteria trumps training

Likewise I own a collection of bikes , cars , boats and an ebike ( love it ) - I was at Specialized today looking at upgrading - the prices are crazy and like you could not but reference the perverseness of choice

YZ 450 less than R130 k

Ktm 790 also around R170

Specialized S Works juts short of R200 k with absolute fuck all value a year down the line , unlike the motorcycles

I completely get this and it is 100% accurate in my case, except it is my wife kicking my ass on the trails, and I have a beer boep.

I wont spend R200k on a mtb bike, however, last time I bought a MTB was 12 years ago so I can justify some of the cost of annualized over this period.

On the other end of the spectrum, I would never buy a sports car, waste of money in my opinion. To each his own I guess.

I went to my local Scott shop Saturday with the 701. A guy came to me and started talking bikes. He made comment that his mtb is a lot more expensive than a new R140k  701.
I made the sum last week on my MTB riding cost. Running cost at the moment is arround R3.5 per kilometer. That is only repairs!!!!

Guys who are into golf and e-bikes simultaneously, must be loaded then? :lol8:

I see e-bikes can compete in the next Cape Town cycle tour.
I will take a e-bike over a mtb.
And a 701 over a e-bike.

And like my grandpa says, "no matter how expensive the bicycle, the engine stays the same"
All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible. T. E. Lawrence

And then enter the  Cape Epic 8 day mtb race. R120000,00 rand entry fee. And it sells out on line in 30 seconds. Proof of payment in 24 hours or the next team on the wait list gets the entry. 500 team of two entries.

Bicycle stage races cost a packet too.  Bicycle tyres cost more than a car tyre :(

Huh? what car tyres do you use?  MyMTB tyres are anything between R450 and R750 and I just repaced a tyre for Kombi for R2750.00

The bicycle every day of the week. Thatís an investment in you.

Canít beat good health

However, maybe a cheaper bike an second hand 790 maybe the perfect compromise.

Second hand bicycles for the win. Let the first owner take the knock  :deal:

My mtb is a demo model I bough for half the price of a new one. My road bicycle I built using a second hand frame and components. The prices of new bicycles are ridiculous.
