Look, in the world of dick measuring, that bicycle is a rock solid 8"
And I cannot imagine any other reason to buy it.

My brother has this cycling disease. He does the epic and all sorts of shit like that. His bike was apparently "cheap" at just below R150k. When I asked him how he justified the price he said to me its the special cut gears, the carbon frame and a hole bunch of other features used in the sales pitch.

When I asked him why he cycles, he said for exercise. So I said to him a cheaper bike is better then because its heavier for a start and you will get more exercise when you ride it, right?

He changed the subject!  :)

I purchased a R50k bike (Specialised Epic Carbon fiber something or other) for R8k just after 94.7 because the owner was upgrading. It was 6 months old at the time and barely ridden as he trained on a road bike then decided to do the race on the mountain bike. I will never buy a new bike at those prices.

Jip second hand is the way to go. If you enjoy cycling and can afford an expensive bike, go for it. The technology going into bikes these days are phenomenal.

I ride a full sus all mountain/enduro bike. 160mm suspension travel front and back, built up from secondhand parts and performs right up there with bikes costing R50k+ , and it cost me about R10k. It was cheaper because it is 26in and everyone is on 29in these days but I'm happy with 26in as I don't do long distance/x-country rides.

One of the guys I ride with rides a super fancy carbon frame bike with similar performance to my morewood, maybe the new bike weighs 5kg less and pedals a bit easier, but we do the same rides, my bike can handle bigger hits/drops/jumps and his bike is financed (keeping up with the joneses ain't cheap  :lol8: )

Just much more expensive than high-end hookers.

I paid R6.5k for a new 27.5 MTB.  It is turquoise and has a flat tyre.  I might repair it 2 weeks before the next Tankwa when I start training again.

To each their own.

People think I'm crazy for what I've spent on TV's.

Buy whatever the hell you want.

Would I spend that kind of money on a bicycle?  If I had the thought of doing that I'd know the end was near for me.

As Buff pointed out, 99.9% of the frames are built in Taiwan, save for a few hand-built jobs.

It's like anything else, once the best begin using it, everyone dreams of being as good as them and they will buy the same tool thinking they have a chance to be as good as the superhuman among us, Tiger, Federer, Armstrong, etc.

A friend of a friend is married to the man who makes Federer's rackets.  He now has mega money because every tom dick n harry that plays tennis wants a custom made racket from the same man whom crafts Federer's.

I have 4 bicycles hanging off the back fence in the yard.

3 of them I got for free, thrown away on the street. Only needed patches in the tubes. 1 I paid $10 for at the charity shop for my son, his Mongoose BMX.

I'll bet I never spend much more than that on a bicycle. Ever.  :sip:  :lol8:  :peepwall:

I remember you and I driving with the HP2 and the 690 on a trailer with a bakkie in front of us carrying 2 bicycles and you said those bicycles are worth more than our motorcycles. That stuck with me. Someone also told me a while back that some cycle stores now have on site F&I. Not only are people financing their bicycles but enough people are doing it to justify having someone permanently on site to handle it. Madness

Just correction...
The bicycles COST more than the motorcycles.
I highly doubt they are WORTH more on a resale.

As for the wife banning riding motorcycles, if you know how many people die in a BED, you would never get into one !   :eek7:

Yes, but in bed you probably wont even know you died, on a bike or bicycle you will be well aware!

Agree we get shafted with bicycle prices, not necessary to spend that much, buy second hand they devalue quickly.
Still cheaper than a triple bypass  ;)

It is a very expensive sport, when you get really into it.
I have a family member who is really into it. 5 Cape Epics, 2 Swiss Epics and on his way to the Pioneer Epic in NZ now.
Any idea what that cost him? To ship his bike he has a special case/crate. Luckily money is not his biggest problem

When I bought a motorbike after the moratorium was lifted, he advised me to get a little black book for all the ER nurses I was going to meet. Bikes and biking being dangerous and all that.
He has been hospitalized due to falls more than me in the last 7 years.
Only protective gear mountain bikers wear is a silly little helmet. If they take a tumble, which they do in seriously technical terrain at breakneck speeds, they get carried away on stretchers.
Insurance on his bicycle cost more than my bike's. Not to mention services

People are alo fickle in that they need the latest year models etc... come late august the current year models are being replaced with the new models for the next year which is often a colour change or component change, sometimes even cheaper components to keep the bike price consistent, and thus big specials are offered on a previous year model. That's the time to buy.

had some great deals over the years buying new old stock
