Buy bike in Tanzania, drive to SA
« on: October 28, 2019, 03:12:23 am »
Good day everyone,

I am going to climb Kilimanjaro July next year, and then I want to buy a 250cc bike in Dar es salaam and drive down to Pretoors. I will then just use the bike on the farm in SA.

I am planning on registering the bike in my name, all legal stuff in order. Does anyone know the process to cross the border out of Tanzania and then on to SA? My route will be Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Bots, SA. The camping and food I can sort out. But I need info regarding registering the bike in my name and then crossing borders without any problems (or as least as possible)

Kind regards
Derek

Problem number one, you will have to export the bike legally or you won't have the original docs to reregister in SA as they are kept at the border. If that's not an issue then its easy once you have bought the bike.
Registering in your name may be an issue as you will need a TIN to do this and as a non resident it may not be simple. Best get a facilitator involved

I am totally fine with buying the bike with the idea from authorities that I am just traveling outside Tanzania and will return later but never do. So like i said, the bike can be used on the farm where no licensing is necessary. Or is this too unethical?

Just consider they might get suspicious at the border. Non resident with local bike etc... Otherwise don't pay too much so it doesn't hurt if you have to leave the bike at the border. If you plan on passing through Iringa/mafinga give us a call. +2557 ate ate too too win 443.

Sorry, but I don't follow the logic...  :patch:

Why not buy a bike in ZA, ship it to Dar and ride it back?
After all, it is going to live here for the rest of its life.
Then all your border crossings with the bike are "going home"?

Is not a bad plan. Do you maybe know someone/company on how to ship my bike to Dar?

Kind regards

I have not done any bike shipping myself.
I am sure that there are WD's here who have done into Africa trips and have had their bikes shipped back our vice versa...?
