To add to my story, FC had us itching to ride that road again, so we decided to do that route again yesterday, Monday.

Disaster however struck us as I picked up a porridge on the back wheel and had to repair it. This was about 2km from the old Bacela Police Station. Once the wheel was taken of and the tube out we found that the valve was missing from the tube.  We had a replacement tube, but one for the wife 250 and not for my 650.  I however still used the tube just to pinch the damn thing when I pulled the tyre back onto the rim.
Off came the tyre again and the 2 pinched areas were patched.
In the tube went and tyre back on the rim.  I pumped the wheel but it would not keep pressure.
Out came the tube again, pumped the tube, no puncture, the tube kept the air.  In went the tube again, tyre back on, pump the bastard, low and behold, it would not keep the air.   :dousing:  :dousing:  :dousing:

I road the fucker out with the flat and all, albeit only to Thomas River were I waited for the wife who proceeded home and fetched the vehicle and trailer.  We left the house at 8 in the morning and only arrived back home at 18:30.

To come back to the Bacela road we did yesterday, they/who ever in the mean time repaired most of the road towards the old Police Station.  It is a lot tamer than what it was back then, but still a very scenic route, although it is very dry at the moment and there is hardly any water in both the Thomas river and the Kei river.

Yip we decided a few years back after many torn valves that it is not worth the additional cost!

Wow Vis Arend! What a contrast!!! Hardly any water when we went through there and not as lush... pretty bleak actually, but nonetheless it was a really pretty area to ride in.

As you said, nothing really technical and the road was relatively good, but at times (generally when I had lost the fun factor and my sense of humour) the AT became a bit heavy through some of the loose stuff. There were also a fair amount of big speed humps which meant a slower pace. Did not want to hit one of those the wrong way and come off.

There were plenty of roads shooting off to the right and left. Thank goodness I kept on the 'straight' path.

FC, thanks for allowing me to do a little right up on that area in your rr.   :thumleft: :thumleft:
As you mentioned, not really technical now but it still needs your attention, and please, do not mention those humps.  For crump sake, I battled there with the big S10 with a pillion.  Just as you picked up speed you brake for the damn hump.

I still think you did very good riding there with that size bike.  I now noticed that the little scooters is just a breeze in that area, the loose stuff and humps becomes a playground for these little bikes.

On a plus side, while we were busy fixing the tube a farmer stopped and assisted where he could.  He actually mentioned to us another road leading out of there through some farm roads.  He said we must take that route back to Cathcart.  He however said it is a nice challenging track, well just what we want.  Nannie and I will explore it soon and report back on it.

Chris... I honestly love the bike. It doesn't feel heavy at all. Sometimes lighter than my 640. Although it gets a bit heavy when I am tired and have struggled with it through the rough stuff. That said, I don't think the bike is to blame. I am very unfit. I really wanted to ride the 640 or even the DR on this trip, but then I wouldn't have learnt much.

It makes me feel far more capable than I am, especially because it takes the think work out of changing gears.

It will happily putter along, but will also happily do high speed when prompted.

I am yet to try the manual settings and although I had it on Sport for a while, I found it a bit twitchy so I switched it off.

Some days are just like that. Got a flat in thick sand in the Kalahari once around 09H00 in the morning. Had a bottle of sweet wine but no water with me. As it got hotter and eventually taking the wheel of 11 times I was picked up late afternoon by a bakkie and dropped of in Bray.  Just parked the bike plonked myself in the bar and guzzled down 8 beers.

Nee daar wys niks op Google nie, so dis seker 'n plaas pad of some sort.
