I need a RHS tappet cover for my 1200GSA
« on: December 30, 2019, 10:39:18 pm »
So the wind blew my bike over at my office today. Yip, it was blowing hard and seems to swirl in one area. Anyway, I hear a noise go and pick up bike and there is oil on the ground. Hairline crack in tappet cover where crash bar touches  plastic cover. Any suggestions for repair or replacement? Are there second hand covers available anywhere? What repairs can be done and is it even worth trying to repair. All suggestions appreciated.

I have repaired three or four tappet covers on the old BMW bikes. Two were badly cracked. I thoroughly cleaned and prepared the surface on the inside around the damage and roughed it up bit. Then good olí Pratley steel. About a 1.5 mm thick application. Smoothed the Pratley nicely with wet fingers, left for at least 24 hours and never leaked there again.

Pratley steel is some crazy stuff. I've seen videos of guys patching a clutch covers etc.  on the trial and the bike made it home without any oil  leaking.

As Eberhard said, make sure the bonding surfaces are very clean and you should be good to go

So I cleaned the cover well. Took a very good look at the damage. Worse than I would like. Either way I need to replace the cover. Can anybody direct me to where I could buy a used tappet cover. No need for new for me. Anybody got a suggestion?
