Hey,

Chrisb and myself went to the thinkbike Kopdood coffee at Nescafe Cafe in Rivonia this morning, and met a very cool dude there. He is from Canada, and is in the third year of a six year around the world trip. We missed everyone by 5 minutes, exept for Rene himself, and had a nice chat with him.

He has traveled North America, Canada, back through USA, Central America, and South America. 75 000kms with his F650 Dakar. He will be in SA staying with Split, and doing a few shorter rides (he sounds willing to take on travel partners) Durbs, Lesotho, Garden Route, etc , and will head up through Africa in a few weeks.

Check out his websites:

www.renedian.com is about the 2.5 years in North, Central and South America.

The new website is http://web.mac.com/renedian/iWeb/Renedian/Welcome.html

I have given him the link to this site, so he will probably pop in sometime.

Thanks for your warm welcome. It has been a great week already. I have great hosts that I met on F650.com, and have been to 2 mousa lekker jawls already!

Tuesday morning I am off to Maputo, and up the Moz coast for a bit, returning in a few days to ZA via Swaziland.

Everybody I meet insists that I do eastern Transvaal on the way to Sani Pass, so if you have a favorite route in there, please let me know!

I will return to Jo'burg after Lesotho to collect some kit, then south to Kimberly and the Garden Route.

See you on the road!

Rene

Cheers, all. I will be in the cape in 4 weeks or so. I would stay longer, but I am worried about the rainy season in Zambia/Tanz/Uganda.

Does anybody know if the November-December rains in this area means:
a) an hour in the afternoon and travel is unencumbered on the tarred roads?
or
b) can't see the sun for 60 days and all the roads are under water...

Some info on that subject would be lekker...

Howdy, and welcome Rene!

I hope you realise that you're doing what EVERYONE on this forum would give their left testicles (or breast, sorry ladies) for!!!

In any case - the rainy season depends on where you are - in the Cape, the mediterrean climate promises for lovely sunny days all through summer.  In Kwazulu-Natal, however, the sub-tropical climate brings with it days (OK, 3 MAX) of fairly light, but, for us Africans, seemingly endless rain.  On the highveld (Gauteng and surrounds, including Mpumalanga - East of gauteng) the rain during summer is MOSTLY limited to a late afternoon cloud-burst, which settles the dust and cools down the air quite nicely.  We do get a day or two of continuous rain, but rarely in November-December.  The rest of the country is mostly quite arid, and doesn't experience much rain.  But indeed, I'd opt for option a)!  :D

Quick SA geography lesson

Happy, and safe travels!

I have heard of this Africa-time phenomenon, but never thought it made things happen quicker than they were supposed to...!
