Kakkerlaksvlei - a secret riding place near PE?
« on: November 04, 2008, 02:01:49 pm »
This is not a ride report per sa, but rather an addition to another rode report posted by Bakkie Afternoon playtime!!! on 30 October 2008

I wonder how many PE dogs are aware of a place called Kakkerlakvlei in the same vicinity of Bakkie's ride on that afternoon.  It is about 9 to 10 km north-west (on a bearing 315dec T) from where he  took his photos.

Here are some pictures and a map to the place.  I will let the photographs illustrate the area.  In the first two images the red arrow indicate the spot from where I took the first 3 photos.

Nice twee spoor riding, some loose stuff, a ravine to explore, and more...

More images ....

I actually want to return (with partners) and give that ravine a go, and see where that track in the distance ends up.

Also (ref 2nd last photo) some lekker loose stuff to sharpen the concentrations  :mwink:

A great area for short rides  :ricky:
I spent a lot of time there when I first got the KLR.
Nice spot to  practice technical stuff. :ricky:
Let me know when you want to go back Watty, I'd like to join you
( Or is the area you looking at to Ruff for the KLR?)

Wow... we rode those places stukkend in the '80s. There are two monster hill climbs that I remember. One had a nasty outcrop about 30m from the summit, and a nasty zigzg start. The other was just a mother of a hill that you could get up only with a good run and a 50% success rate. Some called it the widowmaker...

Watty... call me. If I can't do it on the 650 at a decent lick... well, I'll just go around it...  ;D

You can do anything if you have enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes your hopes rise to the stars. Enthusiasm is the sparkle in your eyes, the swing in your gait, the grip of your hand, the irresistible surge of will and energy to execute your ideas. Enthusiasts are fighters. They have fortitude. They have staying qualities. Enthusiasm is at the bottom of all progress. With it, there is accomplishment. Without it, there are only alibis.

Ok, seeing that you okes are all excited and worked-up about Kakkerlaksvlei, I went and found some more photos I took along the route (during a 4x4 GPS competition, that is why a cage is unfortunately in some of the shots - so no witty remarks please!).

In this instance I was travelling through the area towards Jagtsvlakte (near Despatch - easy to find on map posted in first message).  As you can see the track can get quite technical in places.  Encountered a rider on a Honda CRF250 doing his thing ...  could only watch and wave >:(

I see an outride in the offering along this route in the near future  :thumleft: ...  Just watch the Planning a Ride board for more details.  :mwink:

I think it's deaf a NUT lee time for a PE training session. WOT??

There are some very experianced riders here.

We could break into smaller groups or even each of the pros take a speciality,
eg. sand, stoney gravel, water crossing, falling, downhills, up hills, etc.

Would really do the PE WDs good.
(We'd get to understand what Wolveseun & co talk about)

We train, ride and then braai inny aand.

Don't rush it, it's helmet time you need, not a destination. Take it easy.
