I do take orders for custom work on fixed blades....chat to me if you're interested. :3some:

For factory folders you will not easily beat Martin Nel (The Knifeguy)....he can normally source whatever you need if he doesn't have it on his site.

So, am looking to buy my laaitie an EDC knife.  He studies graphic design and fotography.  I knife is always handy.  Ek also commutes to class using public transport and are often in strange places on photography assignments.

Criteria - less than R1000. Straight blade. Multi purpose design. Folder. Light. Medium size

Narrowed it down to the two below, but happy to discuss other options..

Both D2 steel.  Thoughts on this?

The guy on youtube channel "Outpost 76" has done extensive edge retention testing on production knives. Performance on D2 blades showed huge differences in performance between different suppliers. Must be very sensitive to heat treat I guess.
Most D2 knives incl the Cut Jack were outperformed by supposedly "softer" steels that are easier to sharpen and have much better corrosion resistance.
These included a couple of models from Ruike in 14c28 and knives in Aus-8 from Cold Steel and Ontario. The ontario Rat was one of the few D2 models that performed well.
