Very nice work Rossdog
I believe you will get many edc and cleaver orders from this group.
Is it my imagination or are you not too fond of jimping?

I don't mind it at all. I've made quite a few knives with jimping on the spines. It's an easy way to stuff upma nice blade if you get it wrong though. Also it only suits the more modern designs (IMO).

Great stuff Ross, very glad you joined.  You have so much to offer, keep it up and keep my purse empty.      :thumleft:   :lol8:

I'm afraid I lost my best customer when I sent you that belt grinder. No you're going to do it yourself.

I am not making any blades (yet), just using off-the-shelf Mora Classics.

The handle is a mix of Blackwood, Bulletwood, Poplar, Milkwood and Ash.

Great work and progress, Ross. I have a kitchen knife you made some time ago. Carbon blade and gets used daily, like in seriously every day. Just cleaned it now for the pick after cutting some tomatoes for samies  :lol8:
People say nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day. And doing nothing often leads to the very best kind of something.

Glad you're enjoying that knife. I have few carbon knives I made that I use in the kitchen also. I much prefer carbon, despite the schlep of rust and patina. After I've cleaned them after use, I spread a dab od olive oil on the blade to preserve the steel.

My virginity is broken. Learnt a lot, made mistakes had a hell of a lot of fun.
Steel 5160
From flat bar, forging, heat treating, grinding, hardening, grinding and tempering. It was a lot to take in at pace.
Am I happy with it, by no means but I will always remember it.

Why not?  You made it, it was your 1st attempt and you did damn good, better than the rest of us that did not attempt it.    You can be proud, that is your 1st hand made knife, treasure it and see how you develop as you go on.   :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

My other passion, been doing it for a while...exhibiting at Brooklyn, Huntex and once before at Durban Easter Knife Show.
It became more of a side business and less of a hobby.... :peepwall:
Made this some time ago as part of a series I did at the time. Blade is 5160 carbon spring steel with shredded carbon scales and kydex sheath.
I'm known to make some blades that are on the large side

How did you get that colour, tempering?

The colour comes from etching in ferric chloride for about 15min (depending somewhat on the concentration of the solution).

More research to do :lol8:. I assume after clean up and before adding leading edge?

Yes, when the blade is done.  I normally only add the edge once everything, including the sheath, is done.
