We've never heard of the guy only know he is a wilddog called Straatkat and a master at his craft.

Did a film about him on his farm in Magalies. He is such a humble & solid human. He has won so many international awards. Also rides bikes, races a BMW & many other interesting things.

That's very neat Mr Zog! Nice consistent bevel you ground/filed there. Did you use a file? You probably know the trick of using a simple filing jig, or making a jig for an angle grinder? If not, I'll share. If the bug bites you proper (which it probably will), a belt grinder is the way to go.

I admit to owning and using a belt sander... it isn't ideal for knifemaking as the rotary disc side is at the level of the bottom of the belt, making it impossible to grind the bevel on one side.

So I clamped a short spirit level to the bed to raise it up enough to clear the disc... 

I'll take a pic or two of my setup next time I am out in the workshop. 

So this is how I set up my belt grinder/sander.





As you can see, the disc sander is in the way of the bottom of the belt sander...



I clamped my workpiece e to a strip of aluminium angle so I can rest the angle on the spirit level and after modifying the support table so that it could do a "negative" angle towards the belt I was able to cut the bevels.






This setup wasn't ideal as the best angle I could get was just around 20 degrees. Fine for a fine blade like a kitchen or fillet knife, but not so good for a bush knife etc.

So today I made up a jig-block that allows me to cut both 22 deg, and 34 deg bevels. With a perfectly level support. If I change the support angle my options are limitless 





After that I just spent several hours hand-sanding the blade with 220 and then 320 grit waterpaper using light oil as a lubricant. Still a bit of polishing to be done before I make up the handles

There is a knife maker and instructor near Pta Nort known as Mr Herbz, I think he may have an internet page.
I still want to run a few classes but keep on postponing.
The uncle is in a wheelchair but he knows his trade and sells all the correct machines, even the etching machine and so on.
Note to myself; January 21 I'll commit to take a few classes and get some dedicated machines.

I enjoy this thread tremendously.  The guys are busy.     

Here is two that I started a couple of weeks ago.  Other things kept me busy, but yesterday I managed to finished them.  I am still struggling to get the handles to my liking, but with enough practice I should be there soon.

Still a whole lot to go   





I need to go buy some finer waterpaper, the finest I have is 320... 

I have a very old (circa 100 years!) piece of wood that I want to cut and see if it will work for my handle...
