Quick question, I can get my hands on a roller shutter doof gearset, would anyone know if it would be suitable to forge a knife out of that steel?

Chances are it will bee to soft. Test it with a file, or even better, do a spark test with a grinder. The more complex the sparks, the harder the steel should be. Mild steel will make steady uniform sparks, whilst hardened steel will make sparks that "split". Hard to explain with seeing the difference.

When a knife falls, let it fall.
Don't try to break the fall with your foot.

It's amazing how that instinct kicks in. You drop something you immediately stick your foot out to save it. Often it moers down on your toe and hurts, and it was not worth the pain saving it!  This was a good but expensive and painful save. Very pretty knife though.

Ouch!

Thing is, those belts move at a serious speed. They bite you before you know it. The blades get hot and burn you before you can react. Cutting edges leave their mark quicker than lightning. Especially when doing that final polishing.

Dangerous hobby/profecion this knife making.

Banged out 2 knives this weekend. I quite like this one, stacked leather handle. Still have some scratches to polish out, but almost done.
