My memories from having seen those bikers on the open roads in the seventies going to a rally bring up words like “ruffians”, “hooligans”, “chain and yale”, “low-end”, “dangerous”, etc.

Where I now see those bikers on the roads, different words come to mind. Words more like “orderly”, “same attire”, “expensive”, “high income”, “pre-booked”, etc.

Good to see the city again as I remember it from those days. Humewood camping ground was a well known sot, almost iconic.

The 'good' old days when the Buff was still notorious!

Now it's super tame and pretty boring.

Boobs will spice up any rally, so up to you lot to change the current "tame and boring" image it has.  :peepwall:

And it looks if the adventure bikers are the majority now. Will check again this year in Hbos.

Thanks for posting the video, Jughead - brought back many memories.

I took these in either 1977 or 1978 (as in '79 I was in the army), while a student at UPE. While studying I was a photographer on the student newspaper UPEN, so I processed and printed all my own photos.
The camping ground was behind my parent's home in First Avenue Summerstrand, so we experienced the Buff each time it was held there, and I attended many in other centres after that.

I remember the Johannesburg Chapter of the Hells Angels turning up at a student dance in the Marine Hotel and they all shocked everyone by behaving like gentlemen!

Some of you might recognise yourselves or friends, as many are Cape Town bikes.

Hi My 10 cents worth
I remember the Buff in PE in the 70's they were a bit rough but then again that was the era and the image of the time
Bike were affordable to the younger generation who believed they were bullet proof.
Been to a few buff PE, Beachview, Aliwal North unfortunately there was a hiatus between 2005 -2013 ( No Bike, sailing and now ex girlfriend)
Going to the Buff in 2013 I was surprised to see that the average age off those attending must be 40 year old I can only ascribe this to the the price of owning a motor bike and with the
price of petrol put attendance out of the range of they younger market ( I maybe wrong) because of this the rallies are more civil as well a the organisers, weeding out those who try their luck as the towns hosting the rallies complain ??
I have noticed this across all the rallies I have attended

'70's was before my time in SA, but from the '80's I always used to join in the mass ride and a few times tried to sneak my way in through the gate afterwards but their stewards were always too sharp for me.

Then one year I allowed myself to be persuaded to pay and enter and was rewarded with 60 thousand bucks in the prize draw.  :headbang: :occasion16:

I thought, "This rallying lark ain't bad" so I went again the next year all the way to Mossel Bay. But I didn't win so I never went again.  :xxbah:

Nuwe 1100 katana was so R4100. My GPZ1100 was so R5200 gewees. Nuwe 50cc was so R350
Met R10 het ek bottel brandewyn gekoop, liter glasbottel coke en stuk wors vir die braai
