KAROO AND BAVIAANS TRIP, AUGUST 2019
« on: February 15, 2020, 11:10:07 am »
Well they say rather late than never.   :eek7:

This report is long overdue.  I will not bore you with excuses, so lets just get this one out there.  I need to do another rr but would like to get this one behind me before I start the other.

I will keep it short and sweet and let die photo's do the talking.  I hope I can remember what happened on the trip and where we were.   :patch: :lol8:

The weapons of choice for this trip was my XR650L and the wife on her trusted little CRF250L, modified to suite her.   :eek7:

A longish trip was long overdue and the Karoo was calling.  Our planned trip would be from King William's Town to Jansenville, then to Loxton, Sutherland, Montagu, Struisbaai, Kuduskloof, then over the Swartberge to Baviaans and then back home.  Roughly a 5 to 6 days trip, depending how we felt.

Day 1 from King William's Town to Jansenville.

The route for the day.
Less than 2km from our house we are on the gravel.

A short while later we cross the Chalumna and head towards Peddie/Grahamstown.

We stopped in Grahamstown to refeul and for a hearty brekkie at Wimpy.

Thereafter we are on our way to Jansenville via the R400.  This is a long stretch, but beware of the vlakvarke, they are all over.

We stop on the bridge over the Skoenmaklersrivier, one of the rivers feeding the Darlington dam.
Then it is on to Jansenville where we book in at a self catering unit.  We purchase wood and meat and had a nice braai that evening.

Day 2 Jansenville to Loxton

Today would be a complete new road for us, one that we never traveled before.    We've been to Loxton previously, but a different route.

We are early birds and we hit the road early.  More and less in the middle of Jansenville there is a gravel road, direction NE, becoming more East at a later stage.  It is not a numbered road, it runs alongside the Sunday's River for about 30km, maybe less.  Nice and twisty and then the road opens into a vast almost nothing.  From Jansenville you could see this area did not receive rain for a very long time.   It is dusty, sandy and rocky in places. You have some farm gates to open and close on your way to Aberdeen.  It was early morning, but the sun was already showing signs of a hot day ahead.

The route for the day

From Aberdeen it is a short stint on the tar to a un-named road with plenty turnoffs before you reach the R381 towards Loxton.  I think a total of 9 turn-offs.   :eek7:  :eek7:
For one or other reason I only have a limited number of photos on this road.     :o

In any case, this is what I have.

Hardy de Kock heard that we are on our way to Loxton and insisted that we stay over at his place.  What a great guy and team from Specialised Adventure.  We met him, Hardy, Chantal, Gene and Diesel.   :eek7:  What great people, they hosted us as if we were royalty.     :deal: :thumleft:
I like their setup, everything neat and tidy and packed right and ready for the next adventure.

And his garden is just wow.   :thumleft: :thumleft:

Day 3  Loxton to Sutherland.

Today would be a day full of surprises.  We had a great evening with our host, slept peaceful and was ready for another long day.  We had our morning coffee and were given a food parcel for the day.  We said our good byes and were on our way.
Hardy told me about a nice pass and gave me direction.   We were heading in that direction.

The route for the day would be several gravel roads toward Oukloof Pass, then to Merweville, over Rammelkop Pass to Sutherland.

Route of the day attached.

We left with a nice cool breeze in our faces.  The road service varied from solid hard to sandy.  You had to concentrate and we kept our eyes wide open.  To spoil things pieces were rutted, but nothing to bad.

We were almost in Oukloof Pass.  This was our st time here and we we struct ed by the beauty of this place.  So remote, yet so beautiful.  Yes it was dry but it still held a beauty of it's own.
