Day 2: Molopo to Mariental

Last night when I prepared my sleep roll, a gaggle of mosquitoes sneaked into my tent. Them and the Saturday night party, and THAT music of the locals outside the camp resulted in a sub-optimal night's sleep. But the morning was pleasant with lots of birds life and even an "oog pister" greeting me.

Made good "House of Coffees" coffee with the Aeropress and packed for the day.  Today was going to be very similar to a Namib Desert Run second day ride.
The plan was to cross Hakskeen pan on dirt, but the pan was full of water.  The border crossing  at Rietfontein was very easy with friendly staff both sides making conversation about travelling alone by bike. Road tax on Namibian side was $N220 if I remember correctly.
The south eastern part of Namibia had nice rain a few days prior. Plenty of wet patches on the ground.

The section from Koes to Gochas called 72 dunes in Desert Run days once again did not disappoint. Big smiles in the helmet. Beware of the sneaky 90 degree left turn at the end of that section.
A cold beer at Auob Lodge and a friendly staff member assisted in swapping my ZA sim card for a Nam card.  Data is cheap in Namibia. $N40 buys 1G data and 6000 second local airtime for 7 days.
In Stampriet I stopped at the NG Kerk where we used to go to church in the seventies.

In Mariental I booked in at River Chalets. The canvas tent was R250 per night vs R180 for own camping. At the entrance to River Chalets, Jaco van Wyk is running the Padlangs Padstal. I can highly recommend both places.

Day 3: Mariental

Today I spent in and around Mariental.
I started my school career at Laerskool Danie Joubert in Mariental.
Goeie memories.

Spent a large part of the day at Home Affairs. Success at the end of the day :thumleft:

I bought some nice mutton saddle chops and begged Jaco at the Padstal if his staff could prepare them for me.  He immediately offered to make a fire to braai the chops with a braai broodjie.  Before long I met the local prokureer SJ, Pieter (owner of River Chalets) and his wife and after the second beer we were all having a lekker braai, drinking more beer and red wine.  Made a big fire in the bonnet of an old truck. Spectacular braai.

Vriendelike mense, my wereld se mense!

Paar fotos van die dag....

Flip dit lyk lekker!
Ek het nie geweet verblyf met kamp is so cheap by askham nie. Laat n man sommer nou planne maak.

By Molopo Kalahari Lodge kry jy ook 30% afslag as jy Kgalagadi Park toe gaan.
Dankie dat ek me jou kon klankbord!
