I think one can still do it, I plotted some dirt loops running off the N1 between Kroonstad and BFN. Going to ride them soon and see if I can find some nice spots on the dirt back roads like Dorsland posted.

We never stop at the little picnic spots alongside the road. I reckon those must rate up there with public toilets as one of the dirtiest places to eat.

I always look for a small dirt road off the main road, drive about 1 or 2 kms up there and stop for tea. I look for signs of low traffic levels (tracks, corrugations, litter, pedestrians etc) before making a choice. I have a lot of regular stopping places on routes we often travel. There are plenty of really nice places.

:thumleft: My last trip for work to Bfn I dropped pins for the little roads going off to the sides. I have now plotted a route to connect them all. I even drove with the bakkie along one of these secondary roads and just a couple of km's into it complete silence and no one around.

Often a farmer will stop to see if everything is OK.  End up having a long chat with him.  Bonus.  I have always viewed the drive to wherever as part of the trip/holiday/whatever.

Standing rule in the Dorsland household: if a trip is further than about 200km, the cooler box and flask needs to be packed.

:peepwall:

Moet se, hoe verder noord jy ry, nou Nam se kant toe, raak hulle beter.

Ek kom agter hulle is so effe aangeklam.

So ek dink dalk is hulle kultuur so effe anners as hier, wel ek hoop so in elk geval.   :thumleft:.

I still do it. To me itís not a road trip without padkos. I donít go as elaborate as some of the posters mentioned. Just frikkies, eggs, cream cheese and biltong sarmies along with steaming coffee in my stanley flash. I have to say the rest stops in the karoo were extremely well maintained. We stop at rest stops when the dogs need a break but snack at stations after refuelling/stopping for a wee

Snack box with a wimpy shake a few weeks ago

n Sakkie biltong
Frikkadelle
Tamatie en kaas toebrootjie (geen uie)
Gekookte eiers
