I was just remembering days gone by in the 60's and 70's before this era of crowded "One Stops"
with beggars and car guards wanting R5 to look after the car you are looking at directly from your table.

We used to travel with our own refreshments and food, stopping along the roadside at a concrete table and chairs under a tree.
Out would come a plastic table cloth and a big Tupperware dish with delicious snacks made the previous evening.

I remember cold finger food - chicken wings and drumsticks, Escort pork sausages and ouma's frikkadelle the size of golf balls.
There were always hard boiled eggs in their shells, ham sandwiches and fresh-cut tomato wedges.
There were cheddar cheese fingers, gherkins and tiny tart pickled onions.
The Thermos would come out with piping hot coffee and tea, sweet and strong, with sterilised milk or else black with condensed milk to add to taste.
It was an event to be enjoyed and every car that passed you hooted as they went by and we would wave back.

Memories of an era long gone, when I didn't have a care in the world except whether there were any more Toff-o-luxe or Mint Humbugs left in the tin at my mother's feet...  ;D
