Stupid or wise?
« on: March 15, 2020, 01:45:45 pm »
I bought a new XT660Z 5 years ago and really enjoyed the Thumper, but it is time for a new bike although the XT only got 41000km on the clock and is still 100%.
I am seriously considering replacing my bike with a KTM 690 r, but want to no if it is the right tool  for longer trips example, Cape Town to Eastern Cape where one found beautiful scenery and gravel road.
Your inputs will be appreciated

If you want to radically alter your riding towards the technical, wise.

You will find the XT660Z and the KTM 690 being almost two opposites in the D/S world.

On the 690 you will find little of the XT's comfort or reliability.

But you will find good economy and really good suspension.

Range on the XT is double that of the 690, standard.

Kry die 690.

StrokeHer on this forum did a solo Kaokoland trip on his XT660, which was anything but boring, and which would have been a stupid risk on something as unreliable as a 690.

So, before you guys start classifying theYamaha as boring, think twice. :ricky:

Unless you are really planning to do some technical stuff the 690 is going to be an overkill. The 690 will be more fun to ride though until you start putting on some serious km's then you will wish for the 660 again.

A reliable alternative is to look for a inexpensive and roadworthy Yamaha WR450, and take that on a trip or two, while keeping the XT.

I really don't think that is very good advice. Yes a WR450 is one of the most reliable dirt bikes ever built but it's still a dirt bike and doesn't fit the requirements mentioned. There is a WD with almost 100 000kms on the clock of his 690. No dirt bike will do that without some serious maintenance

I exchanged my XT660Z Tenere for a Husqvarna 701........

It is like trading in your Toyota Corolla 1.4 GL for a VW Golf GTi R(or similar)

I can tell you this...................the wind protection (aerodynamics) on longer trips is a lot better on the Tenere.
No windprotection on the 701/690

The fuel range on the Tenere was probably it best feature.  I easily got 450km
On the 701 my fuel light comes on at around 190 km +- with total range being around 230km, maybe 240km...........but never took it that far.
This is probably the most negative thing of the 701.

When the going gets rough, you definitely want to be on the 701, but then you got to decide how much you
are going to find yourself in rough situations?
I like the feeling of the 701 being the "go anywhere " kind of bike.

The power delivery of the 701 is quite a revelation if you come from a Tenere.
It is really a fantastic machine the can really deliver when you twist the throttle.
This is most probably its most fantastic feature.

The 701 have absolutely no luggage options.   I've got an expensive Toys2Go pannier frame on
mine that I put soft luggage on.

Then from a practical viewpoint...................the biggest pain for me is the fuel cap being at the middle of the bike
right at the bike.  On a trip, everytime you fuel up, you have to release and move all the luggage to get to the fuelcap.  :-\

Some will complain about the hard seat of the 701/690 but for me it is nothing.................But it might be a problem
for you.

You can easily carry a pillion on the Tenere................but forget about it on the 701/690.

Hope my input helps you make a decision.
