The 660 is a boring but safe choice. My BIL has the pre-Tenere 660, it is so comfy, but boring. My XR600R is faster, but a strykplank.

Honestly though the 660 is not a very good bike compared to so many others out there. Just as heavy as a 990/800 whilst being 70% down on power. Same suspension travel at the back as a 1150 /1200 BM. Rides hard especially with knobbies. You have to gear it down in 6th to haul it's fat ass up a hill. Carries it's weight high. Got a moerse high seat height. The motor dates from the late 90's. The fuel gauge lies. Own it long enough and ride rough tracks chances are your frame is going to crack at some point. The dashboard is prone to rattlers and the reflector will break it's tabs and flap around inside the cowling. The stepped seat hits you in the but when going over a bump because the rear shock is almost useless stock. You can also drop lots of money on power mods and gain maybe 4-5HP if you are lucky.

But the saving grace, they look so good (I reckon how an adventure bike should look) and even in the second pic's state they will get you home

A reliable alternative is to look for a inexpensive and roadworthy Yamaha WR450, and take that on a trip or two, while keeping the XT.

I really don't think that is very good advice. Yes a WR450 is one of the most reliable dirt bikes ever built but it's still a dirt bike and doesn't fit the requirements mentioned. There is a WD with almost 100 000kms on the clock of his 690. No dirt bike will do that without some serious maintenance

I have to agree, although I thought that the 690 is a lot closer to a 450 than it is to a 660z, therefore my suggestion.

That bottom pic the bike must have been ridden by a midget cause the front shocks are way down in the yokes. Looks like the very first Tenere 660 too?

Ek sal die donkie, maar pak en stadig in die rigting van die E/Cape Bash beweeg.
