Lockdown ride
« on: April 12, 2020, 11:14:10 pm »
Today i decided to do a bit of a lockdown ride. Just a daytrip so as not to violate the
Guberment’s rules – Not completely in any case.
First had to decide which bike to take, it being a fairly gnarly ride I decided on the 200 Djebel.  Took it out of the garage to do a proper pre-ride check. Fuel, oil brakes, shocks, clutch wheels , lights and indicators etc.One does not want to get stuck somewhere in the wide open spaces unnecessarily. Found everything to be in order.
So off I went.  After some distance I came to a fork where I had to make my first major decision for the day. Left or right. Took the left which proved to be a good one.  Went up a decent little hill with some loose rocks with no trouble at all. Got to the local dam where  I saw some wildlife. (to be continued tomorrow - got to get some rest after such an exhausting ride)
Some pics:

It's definitely better being stuck on a farm right now.....

Still waiting for the rest of the report.

The view from the dam is just stunning as always. Swartberg to the north. Besemkop to the east. Rooiberg to the south.  Kleinberg to the west.
Standing up here looking at the mountains surrounding me it is hard to even imagine “The Lockdown”
I feel sorry for all the people stuck in the big smoke somewhere.
Anyway time to move on .... things to do, sights to see and deadlines to meet.
First obstacle is this steep hill to descent – luckily the Djebel has excellent brakes – no ABS and any such nonsense here.
I make it down the incline in good shape.  Looking around there is an old clay ruin .... I always think about all the people that have lived in these old houses.
Just a tiny structure – 3 rooms with a fireplace.  Probably a “bywoner” from days gone by.
Pity the old houses are disappearing into the nothingness. Being made from local clay it is the ultimate eco friendly structure.
All  local materials and will eventually just be dirt again. No Carbon footprints left here.
Another bit of wildlife roaming around the old house.
Part 3 to follow:

Looks are deceptive. the greenery is only in the valley where we have irrigation water from the dam.
The veld is extremely dry - except of course where the spekboom grows - like on the hill in the pics Its called Besemkop and is mostly covered in Spekboom.

In front of me I find the next obstacle. Luckily  :xxbah: we have had no rain during the last 2 months so the river is dry. No raging torrent to wade through.
Coming out from the dry riverbed I decide to ride along the river to find a spot to enter and do a bit of river riding.
The gap is pretty narrow but nothing too hectic for the Djebel. Unfortunately just when we get into a good groove the riverbed is blocked by some fallen tree.
This is it no further and no getting out via these steep banks.
Turnaround time. Hmmm not enough space to turn the bike so we’ll need some manhandling. Luckily its not the 950.
I drag the Djebel around – all 125kg of it and go back. Now to get out of the riverbed again. This proves to be not too difficult so we navigate the exit with grace. Fortunately no cameras to see the wheel spinning and my legs all over the place trying to stay on the bike.
Going back on the round trip there is just one more bad spot.
Steep incline with lots of loose rocks, and and deep 2spoor track with high “middlemannetjie” no good English word for this)

When I look up during the epic struggle to get to the top I spot someone watching me. Did not think there will be spectators but there he is.
Ringside seat on top of the outhouse. The little chap waves and the smile goes almost around his head.
Just the last little stretch home through the olive trees and stop where I started. How wonderful is life...
I even have Katie being ecstatic to see me back in one piece. It was a good ride all in all.
Total distance traveled – 2134 m
Total Fuel used – 0,137 liter  (one Cup)

Last pics just some of the plants I saw on the trip. all Succulents which we have an abundance of.
