My Scenic Solo Ride to Joburg
« on: April 20, 2020, 12:29:11 pm »
With us all in lock down and some of us coming out of hibernation :laughing4: .....i thought i may give you folks something to read ....pictures to motivate your rides .....when all this lockdown thing is over one day....

My trip was motivated on a sad note as my ex Wife the mother of my Daughter had just passed recently in January with Cancer..........We were fortunate to still be friends and for this i will always be grateful.

Anyway this Dad needed to go see his  daughter and do what any Dad would do and that is be there when your child is in need even if its only with moral support.....

As the time got nearer to me leaving I decided i needed some me time too and instead of flying up i would take my motorcycle for a spin and leave a few days earlier

As most of you would know motorcycling isn't only fun its therapy.....

So after popping in to the Office on Monday i headed up the N1 to Touwsriver and Maatjiesfontein there i took the turn to Sutherland to get off the main roads
I was looking to do a bit of gravel so from Sutherland it was Frasersburg then Loxton to finally overnight in Victoria West

the nicest thing about the back roads is the peace and quiet and the tar road to Sutherland is also beautiful and scenic.........

I have done the Sutherland Loxton ride many times in the past but its always a road that keeps you occupied and in the fun zone........especially when you think you can kick the speed up a notch or two.......then theres a wash to remind you no dirt road is ever the same no matter how frequently you ride it..........mother nature will always throw in her ten cents and make a few changes here and there

in no time i was in Frasersburg and stopped for a cold drink

Loxton came on quick and by the time i got there i spoilt myself with Coffee and Cake at Die Rooi Granaat.......highly recommended

After leka Coffee and Koek in Loxton it was getting late and i needed to get moving to Victoria West where i intended to stay for the evening

In fact my plan was to go the back roads and around Lesotho up through Sani pass and out in Fouriesburg then up to Joburg

that evening i should have realised mother nature had her own ideas of what was in store............and it didn't necessary tie in with my plans..........There were massive dark clouds moving in on the north west

Woke up early in Victoria West as i had far to go was planning to make Rhodes before nightfall..........................little did i know ..........that wasn't going to be... :o

 :'(

So from Vic West took some tar then some gravel road to Richmond then from Richmond took the gravel to Middelburg and this is where it turned fowl..........

I noticed lots of wet patches then suddenly over a rise at a bit of speed i nearly hit a huge dam in full flight..........thankfully the 1250 brakes are superb but i made a note to check the undies that evening

the rest of the 100km "gravel" road to Middelburg turned into a slow nightmare mud road...........anyone that knows me........when it comes to mud i just run out of talent

after warming up in Aliwal North at the wimpy i headed out to Lady Grey and then the plan was Barkley East pass to Rhodes

by now the rain was coming down in buckets ...........

and true to form as my luck would have it as i approached Barkley Pass the road was closed and barricaded due to land fall across the pass and this was it.........go back all the way to Aliwal North and go around via N6 to Dordrecht and then Elliot

I wasn't keen on this idea and had seen a "gravel" road just earlier to Jamestown............@#$%&

this was the kakest idea of the day because this turned into a mud disaster of note and how i didn't fall was a miracle .........it took me forever to get to Jamestown in the pouring rain and mud ....i could hardly see out my visor.......i was wet through to my undies and socks........it wasn't fun anymore

the tar road from Jamestown to Dordrecht was a relief but being cold wet and hardly being able to see out my visor was no fun at all

When i arrived in Dordrecht i found a lodge with an open room right at the garage and checked in........soaked to the bone

I was so wet and full of mud that i climbed into the shower kit and all and spent the next hour wringing out my gear as best i could and warming up in the room

after seeing the weather report that evening on tv i knew that my trip was going to have to change if I at least wanted to enjoy the ride to my daughter

So the plan for the next day was back on the tar to Aliwal North and up to JHB via the eastern Freestate past Wepner, Hobhouse ,Ladybrand ,Senekal

The road back Home

I left Pretoria in the early hours to miss the traffic

My route was N1 to Parys then back roads to Vredefort , Hertzogville Kimberly and Prieska

The road between Vredefort and Hertzogville is a shocker and clearly one can see the neglect of infrastructure and corruption we are experiencing in this country

there was some places road works were taking place and you had to ride next to the excavations for kms on end............at least something seems to be getting done in some places

Kimberly to Douglas stopped at Kentucky for a quick bite.....then on to Prieska

Then just after Copperton it was over 200km of dirt road past Vanwyksvlei to Brandvlei .........fun times again and no rain made it an awesome section

It was getting late when i stopped in Brandvlei for petrol and i was planning on making Calvinia for the evening.........a serious ride for a day  :ricky:  :ricky:

You don't bugger around when you get going hey. How many kilometres for the round trip Mother? You and @subie not related?  He's another mad one riding 1200 and something clicks one day on his 660R.

And my tyre question again if you don't mind: what new tyres on the bike? I'm asking tyre questions as I am about to have the tyres on my bike replaced and want to make an informed decision.

Your bike looks great, seems to eat miles for breakfast.

the 1250 is much more comfortable than my old aircooled 2010 model .......when i used to do 1000 km on the old bike i was toast
the tyres i have on are Michelin Anakees they are ok for me for distance and tar riding also the road noise is bearable done close to 10k on them now
for my Namibia trip i put on Karoo 3 but the road noise drove me nuts and i wasnt that impressed with them for grip
always used to ride my previous GS's on TKC but felt that this 1250 bikes accelaration will rip the knobs off....hence staying away from TKC

sorry didnt check km round trip but my bike has 14300km on it since June
