How important are clearcoat on vehicle paints?

When painting normal colors like white or khaki, how important are a final clearcoat?
Some guys recommend it, while others say only for metallic paints.?

Unless it is a 2-pack paint, where the laquer brings out the base colour, extra protection is the only reason.

If you have a good quality 2k product and you use the correct hardener with the correct thinner then it is not necessary.

Because clear coat does not have any pigment exposed to the elements the coating has more resistance to the suns uv rays and is therefore more durable.
Most plain colours sprayed today are base coat clear coat anyway as they are using water based colour or base coat ( no VOC being released into to environment )and a solvent based clear.

If you want the better protection of the clear coat then rather dont bother using the 2 pack colour in the first place and go straight with the base coat clear coat.
