Bloated rubbers!
« on: May 14, 2020, 07:57:54 pm »
So doing a bit of stripping and cleaning on the VFR. Big struggle to remove the brake calipers, both front and back, as pistons had siezed up. Got them out and stripped out the pistons with my jury-rigged master cylinder. Whilst stripping I dump everything in the handy bowl of diesel for cleaning and end up forgetting to remove one set of piston rubbers. These have now swelled up to twice their original size. How do I get them to shrink back to normal for reinstallation? Can't get spares and can't wait till next year.

Cheers

Unfortunately any rubber designed for brake fluid reacts with petroleum products like a woman on a chocolate binge... they get rounder and fatter... :sip:

Ek slaap vanaand op die bank as MD dit sien... :imaposer:

You can try a vacuum to leach the unwanted chemicals out.  What will it do to the rubber?  Shrink of course.  How small.......?
If you want to haul ass, you gotta mix gas.

The petrochemicals will not be removed 100% and will continue attacking all the brake components, not worth the risk imho.
