Newbie wonders : GS 1200 vs Super Tenere....??
« on: June 12, 2020, 12:53:35 am »
As above.

This must have been discussed LOTS of times, apologies if this Thread is then deemed unnecessary.

For long distance, good gravel, adventure touring - which one is THE one??

Lets say at a Budget of around R 100 000?

I'm saying "good gravel", but ja, I'd also like to get on a rocky / sandy bits, a bit technical riding to get the knees warmed up. >:D

What say you, and why??

THANKS

The Yamaha will run forever, problem free if a little plain to look at at times, but never boring. I had one for 34k km, great bike. Looks nice in Silver and a good price. Very easy to verify if it is in good condition as so dependable.

There is also a blue one for sale on this forum.

I think the Yamaha is a very under rated bike in this category. Personally that’s what I would go for.

I ride a 2010 Super Ten with 78000km on the clock.Bought it on 24k. Same colour as the one for sale.

Will only sell it to buy another one.

Great all rounder and far superior to the GS in my opinion.

This is debatable. (The yami is just more boring than the BMW, (boring = less abuse = more reliable)

My advice
Add a little monies and you are in GS LC territory, then its not debatable anymore. Test ride and you will see

Ride both and decide then.

I have my 1100 GS from 2003 and still happy!

I recently sold  my 2010 GS Adv for R75k with 70k km on it - completely reliable and apart from servicing never cost me anything other than tyres & upgrade bits.....

I tested them both when I bought in 2010, found the ST to be a bit heavier in overall handling (different motor configuration), but that was a personal choice - if i had to make the choice now, I would save a little more and look at the LC as mentioned.....

Dont discount the big KTM's either - 1190 or 1090 if you can find one at the right price, but if you are set on a shafty, neither the ST or a GSA would be a bad choice, then consider the km's on it and age rather.....

Thanks so far

Yes, I've ridden Airheads before (80 and 100), had an 1150 also for a while, so I guess I am "biased" to the Germans in a way........but sommer just browsed around last night, and read reports in here, and it seems like the ST is a VERY low maintenance, no issues bike. And I honestly never even knew it had a diff, too.

And seems like great value...........I mean, that ST above on Gumtree, R 80000 for a 24000km bike.......!!!

Will look up some specs later - what engine, features, etc etc.

But yes - again, looks like a VERY VERY nice gravel tourer!!! :laughing4:

Broaden your horizons and include the Africa Twin and KTM’s , don’t ask for advice on social media as to which is best , none of us are you , so test ride them yourself and decide

Daai argument hoort in die R&P seksie asb. Alma vote ANC ook…

Ek stem ook GS maar dislike hom terselfdertyd oor almal hom koop omdat Pietie hom koop. N capable bike wat lyk soos n posers bike presies agv hierdie.

En nou sien ek dit as sy grootste voordeel, meer Pieties beteken meer skape wat ekstras koop en verkoop so meer goedkoper parte tweedehands beskikbaar om hom aan die gang te hou/up te grade

Also true.

I think the ST is in the same "class"maybe as the GS, fast(ish) long distance tar and gravel touring, I'd say very little tecnical stuff, but that's not what you buy it for anyway.
The A/Twin is maybe with the KT's and the Tenere 660, or the 800GS?? Lighter, obviously more for technical riding, but then maybe not as comfy on open road (tar and gravel).......??
I've bought an OOOOLD 600 Tenere, want to take up riding again (adventure trips), and I'm thinking of giving that 600 to my son to join me.
This is a curve ball............if I buy another bike for this, my mind was actually already set on something like a 660 Tenere........but ja, the 1200 ST looks nice, for what it is - a heavy long distance tourer.
I havent even ridden that old 600 yet, and I'm already dreaming about my next bike.............!! :laughing4:

But ja, at the end of the Day, find the right tool for the Job.

I would suggest the same. Include the AT. They are apparently very comfortable on the open road and very capable off it as we know. I see there are decent ones available near your budget, even a few dct models.

Edit: En die AT lyk vir my bevange. Nog nooit die gehou van die looks van die ander groot bikes nie.

Depends on what  tyres and oil you want to use, but I’d say KTM 1290. And the you also need to know which ones CoG is lower when standing.
