I may be wrong but iirc it can be considered as defeating the ends of justice so they can either impound your bike our destroy the disc and you have to have it roadworthied again.
Last I heard the dine was about R1500

From memory, there are a few variants, the Grumpy Cop TRAFFIC OFFENCES THEY PULLED YOU OVER FOR and your attitude parts I wont bother with:

1. Standard plate but missing (fell off) or hidden in a top box, but you have valid licence disc displayed, mild reprimand.
2. Smaller plate than legal, but you have valid licence disc displayed, mild reprimand and small fine.
3. Above no licence disc, they will give you kark and can impound.
4. No plate but licence disc, they will give you kark.
5. No plate and no licence disc, they will give you kark and impound.

Not an expert, just as I heard.

I make my illegal plates with a bit of CAD software and then print it out on photo paper which I have laminated for about R5. No-one caught me yet on the XR.

Haven’t used a legal size plate in like 6 years. One of the bikes even came from the dealer with a small plate. Never had an issue.

Modifying, hiding or any such traits will be deemed as obstruction of justice, heavy penalty.

No plate? Only one penalty, riding without plate, R500 fine.

the law can be an ass..... as in this case
smaller plate is not legal and will result in higher fine than no plate - don't you search for the logic behind it... there is none

I got stopped outside Mossel Bay with small plate a couple of Decembers ago. They removed my licence disc to destroy it (normal police) and called a trailer to load my bike.

It took a lot of pleading but eventually they let me go and gave me the nr of nr plate shop in town to get the real thing.

My 4 Bikes all got small but correct # and I keep my License Disc in my Wallet because they look kak on my Bike, been pulled over but never fined.

My laaste 3 bikes het almal 'n kleiner nommer plaat as die standaard grote op en was al deur provincial traffic ook afgetrek in 'n routine road block en nog nooit was ek k@k gegee nie. Ek dink die verkeers manne in die Kaap is nie so hectic soos in Jbh nie.

You're certainly right about the Cape, especially the EC. My 1150 came with an 'illegal' plate the day I bought it. Not tiny, but definitely non standard though it must have passed roadworthy at the time. I've been stopped and checked over numerous times with no mention ever made about it. Maybe because the size difference is no more than about 20%. So I've been getting away with it for 12 years, not just in the Cape but in NC, FS, and KZN. I'm scared to venture further North than that, I've heard bad things.

I got a R500 fine for a smaller number plate and a further R500 for displaying a scan of my license disc on the bike even though I had the original on me.
I explained that water gets in the license disc holder & the disc becomes illegible but the traffic cop didn't want to know.

During the time I was pulled over , 3 bikes went by with no number plates on whatsoever.
Reaction from cops , absolutely nothing .....
