How good is the KTM690?
« on: July 31, 2020, 09:41:53 pm »
Hi Guys & Girls

I seem to be still looking for the perfect bike. I have 3 bikes a KLR650, XT660Z and a KTM990 .Im a Namibia and I Manage a Lodge so Im on the Lodge for 6 weeks then off for 2 weeks, 80% of my leave I spend doing motorbike trips. I load the bike with all my camping gear and equipment needed for the whole trip.  I ride 90% gravel/off road and love doing trips up dry riverbeds and technical staff.

The KLR650 is by far the best off road bike in the group for me, everything feels so easy with it and it feels so much lighter than the other too. Its old school and easy to work on. Its just so under powered and a little boring to ride.

XT660Z is my workhorse and bought it new and it only has 50 000km on it. Its worked hard over the last 4 years due to me working in the Kalahari, then Mozambique and now in the south of Namibia so a lot of the KM have been in very sandy conditions. I think it has the most reliable engine out of the bunch and also very easy to work on but its such a hard motorbike to ride when its loaded up due to it being very top heavy.

The KTM990 i got in April but its stuck in my hometown Swakopmund and cant ride it because of lock down. I have only done about 2000km on the bike sense i bought it. When i was in the market for another bike i was looking for a KTM690 but i came across this KTM990 with only 11 000km on it and fought i had to have it but i think i have made a mistake.

Question 1: So Is the KTM690 a lot better offroad/ gravel roads than the above mentioned motorbikes?

Questions 2: if the right maintenance is done and bike is looked after would you say it will last as long as a xt660z or klr650? I know this is a very open question but for example i would climb on my xt660z with 50 000km and not stress that it will let me down. The guys with higher mileage KTM690 do you feel the same on your bikes?

Thanks everyone for any advice.

Locally near me I know of a 690 that was used to tour the world or parts of. Bike was at 130 000 last I saw it engine unopened. Rider did most the services himself.
I am sure there are many more high mileage 690's just have to keep your hands on them.

Sell all 3 and get a 790, maybe get something small as a backup.

How big are you Norman? What do you weigh?

They all have their issues, little things you mod before and then its reliable, same as on your KLR same on the 690. Just a little more things on the 690 for twice the suspension and the power. If the 990 really is to much bike and the 790 to much monneys/tech then I would look at a 500. A 500 and a 990 setup should cover all your riding needs.

oh yes.
Why are you not looking at a 500?

Hi Guys

Thanks for the replies, Im 1.8m and 85kg.
I have been thinking of having a WR450 and the KTM990 but then the WR450 or KTM500 service intervals make it hard to do long distance travel. I need to find someone in Namibia with a KTM690 to i can ride it and see how it feels. I went to KTM Windhoek and they have some 690 but doesn't help riding it in the city.

Anyone from Namibia with a ktm690 on here?

Thanks

Norman

I have a 690 and a 950 Adventure, they are totally different bikes, the 690 is better in the tech stuff and way easier in sand than the 950, the 950 is much more comfortable on the long stuff.
both are great fun, and both are very capable, the 690 is far easier to service and maintain than the 950 , but for smiles the 690 is the best.
I also hear the argument for the KTM 500 but service intervals are so short compared to the 690 and for the slight weight advantage of the 500 I would still stick to the 690, for range I carry an additional 5L of fuel in a steel jerry can on the carrier and that gives me about 350 km range in total.
Bikes : 2003 KTM 950 adventure S, 2018 KTM 690 Enduro R , BigBoy Revival 150 for the dorp.

no great bike, just service intervals are to small , you have to service every ride, new 690 every 10 000 km

Norman when you next in Walvisbay ask around and find Werner Bachmann he has a 690 and if you ask nicely he might let you ride it. He is also a WD. Go and ask at Tops liquor store where he lives he used to own it.

500 is essentially a race bike. Need to follow the service intervals. Clean air filter after every ride etc.
Current: 2014 KTM 690 Enduro R, 2014 KTM 350 XCF-W, 2013 Triumph Tiger 800 XC

Past: Kawasaki KLR 650, Kawasaki KLE 500, Kawasaki KX 125, Suzuki Bandit 250, Husqvarna SMR 125, Honda CRF 250X

Ehh no, not really.
For weekend warriors those intervals may easily be stretched, and for longer tours ditto.... who's going to pin it the whole way?
Not me eh, call me a sissy.
Use a good oil, and carry a spare airfilter if you need to - and then this bike becomes without peers: it's a "plastic" legally on the road, capable of very technical stuff (only ~106 kg's) plus a ludicrous speed on straights & tar, and longer trips are just possible too!
I was talked into getting one by @Runner & @Catchy - yes, talked into getting one lol - and I am SO glad they did!  :thumleft:
