I'm just gonna stop for a beer on my way home...
« on: September 11, 2020, 12:00:21 pm »
My wife and I were living in Thailand for a year and had to come back for some family matters. On the way back we decided to make a pit stop in India so that We can do a little trip there on a royal enfield Himalayan... what a trip it was.. RR to follow..
Anyways....so we made it back to South Africa just in time for the lockdown...

So there we were just sitting around and after a few months our savings started to look a tad bleak... time to work I suppose...

Managed to get some contract work that paid well but meant that I had to travel to George from time to time.

Perfect excuse to get myself a bike again :ricky:

The DR 650 was the bike that came across my path for a good price and I got away with it...

Off I went on tar to George in very bad fog most of the way but the DR made it without any problems and I settled in to the new project and started working...

In between shifts I managed to do some bits and bobs on the bike to get it a little bit closer to what I had in mind for it..

After about 9 days it was time to return home in Cape Town but I was bitten by the bug again... so I was feeling very allergic to tar all of a sudden..

On a very cold windy rainy night I made myself a cup of coffee and opened up a map... started to look for any alternative gravel road back to Cape Town ..

I've heard about the Tankwa padstal and I decided that I will stop there ... so my route started to unfold and with the help of google maps I set off the next morning.

It was great riding weather and there were not a lot of cars to deal with...

I decided to get out of George as quickly as I could. So George, Oudtshoorn and all the way to Calitzdorp was all tar.
Had a breakfast and some warm coffee and filled the tank in Calitzdorp also got some unnecessary stickers for the bike...

The bike was filled up with petrol and off I went through the huis river pass and soon enough I reached the seweweekspoort sign. I gave the family an update that I was still alive and entering the poort...

Loads of road works in the poort and I was greeted with lots of smiles...

One of my favorite stretches of gravel was waiting for me on the other side of the poort...
as I came through the last bend it was a down shift, up on the pegs and throttle time... what a road.. I've always had a great run on that road... love it!

The road flew by and before I knew it I was in Laingsburg.
I stopped under the rainbow bridge at the edge of town for a photo.

I filled up again in Laingsburg and headed out to Matjiesfontein...

Google maps showed me a road that turned off the N1 towards the padstal so I started to look for it...
I rode past it at first but then saw a gate that was unlocked with a sign saying to close it behind me...

Oh well... I went through the gate had a sherry for the cold and proceeded on this road...

The gps took me down a little overgrown jeep track that didnt feel right but I kept going.... eventually I had to turn around at a locked gate and I had to go back to the N1..  :'(

I was not gonna give up on that padstal beer !!!

At touwsrivier a garage owner told me that I needed to take the Pinaarskloof road and he explained to me to just keep left...

This was what I was looking for... I had a Jol on this road! It went on for miles and there were nothing around.. just what the doctor ordered... and the DR was in heaven...

i did not want this road to end ! It was great!

But I was starting to get worried that I was not on the right road...
I kept going though and finally saw some wind generators and some guys working around them.. I stopped and they confirmed that this road did lead towards the padstal.
Some more great gravel ahead and I reached a t- junction with a sign pointing to the padstal.. 34km to go.

Had to pass a few cars and a road grator but soon enough I saw a car standing upright with its nose buried in the sand at the  padstal!!!

I made it.... beer time!!!!

A beer and burger down I had to get going again!

The road to ceres went far too quickly and I felt sad to know that the adventure is coming to an end...

but it was nice to see how the scenery started to change as I got closer to the coast again...

The mountains that surrounds Tulbagh is always a beautiful sight!
And the late afternoon in the Swart land is just so peaceful..

I rode a bit slower and started to feel a sense of calmness come over me...
The traffic and the noises didn't bother me as much...

I got home and unpacked the bike...
My gear and clothes full of dust and mud splatter, my bikes headlight and screen full of unlucky bugs...

Happy to see my wife again...
happy to have a bike again...
And I am happy it's this DR 650...

I kissed her goodnight and then went inside to go have dinner with my wife  :imaposer:

The next couple of days I would spend fixing some niggles on the bike getting it ready for the next adventure..

Ride safe everyone!!!
