IT goes for swim - Sad ending
« on: October 10, 2020, 10:07:01 pm »
Good rains in the Calitzdorp area and the river coming down strong. yesterday a group of riders wanted to cross one of the drifts in Groenfontein and the only Italian in the group went for a swim. The others caught a fright and did not attempt the crossing.
This morning they were back to do some salvage work.
Pic 1 - Crossing now with much reduced flow
Pic 2 - Italian hooked
Pic 3  - italian surfacing through the trees.

People regularly underestimate the power of flowing water. See it on numerous YT videos too.

Did that Guzzi overnight completely submerged?

Yes it was completely submerged half the day and all night.
People driving by at night actually saw a light under the water but did not know the bike was there.
some more pics of the rescue. As you can see not much damage from the rocks etc. One small ding in the tank and some scratches on the exhaust and engine. the bike is almost brand new.

I avoid water crossings as far as I can.

Or at least walk it first, to both get a feel of the current strength, and the bottom surface.

The water would be allover, even the inside of the frame would now start the rust process.

That Jukskei river crossing by Lanseria always gives me the heebie-jeebies. It's so hard to tell just how deep it is from the bank.

I think if it is too deep you'd only find out way too late and you'd probably be retrieving the bike from Hatebeestpoort somewhere :lol8: :lol8:

I have had a almost moment crossing that low water bridge. Current was strong enough to start pushing me across the bridge. My seat has never been gripped so tight before.

IT goes for swim - sad ending
« Reply #18 on: October 12, 2020, 04:23:31 pm »
this guy can be extremely happy it was just the bike.
A friend of mine (Actually my neigbour) was caught on Friday night at the previous low "Drif" with his Hilux 4x4 and we searched for 2 days for the him and his bakkie.
We found the bakkie on Sunday around 14h00 and had to get police divers to help look for Ronnie. the power of the water buried the bakkie under the debris and we could not find it even with drones. It was found when someone walking along the road smelled petrol.
Sadly his body was recovered about 800m from the river. The bakkiie was about 100m downstream of the drif.
He crossed the river earlier on Friday to visit his kids and when he came back later that night the river must have swollen and he got caught.
Do not underestimate even a small river. They are dangerous when it rains up in the mountain.
RIP Ronnie. (He rode a 650 Dakar but not on WD)

PS - when we recovered the bike on Satrurday we did not even know yet that Ronnie was missing.
