Hmmm, so I really was basically at the end of the rough stuff, and then turned back to drag my wounded swingarm through the rocks again...c >:(

Great stuff  :thumleft: You guys must've been knackered after that ride. Respect for doing those rides on the big bikes - not a lot of people can do that  ;)

Back at Ofcalaco we had a fantastic Peppersteak pie and a fizzy drink to wash it down. Tyres were inflated and we dressed for the trip to Hoedspruit into a strong headwind.

Back at our digs, we showered and went to the pub for a great Eisbein and a couple of beers. We were in bed shortly after eight with tired bodies.

It rained throughout the night and the next morning a decision was made to cancel out technical ride home and take R40 back home.

We were packed and ready to ride at 7am and it started pouring down 5 minutes into our ride and dis not stop until we reached Hazyview where we stopped for a quick coffee. Temp never went above 10 degrees celsius.  All 3 of us were drenched and shivering uncontrollably.  I was home just after 9, still shivering and unable to use my frozen hands.

What a privilege to ride with these two. Both very skilled riders who have been mates for years and riding buddies for just as long.

I learn so much  from watching guys like them ride and appreciate all their words of encouragement and praise and their helping hands when I fall over or get stuck.

My Gopro footage of the pass

I live on a street named Penge, so Penge Pass has always been there, snarling at me in the back of my mind... sort of compulsory riding... thanx for dangling the carrot a little closer to my nose.

The rest of the pass had clearly been washed away quite a bit by the recent rains, but we managed to get to the bottom in one piece, making up for some lost time in the process

Awesome stuff. You people really go to the exstreme. A Question for Japie. Do you trailer the bike to nelspruit when you go ride there or ride from Spring to nelspruit, and then still ride around there and then back again. Awesome skills from all of you

I would rather fall a thousand times, and keep riding, than to stop riding and never fall

On a technical descent on the pass just before Penge, Mark was running his bike down against compression on a tricky section. When he tried to start the bike, the battery was dead. I had visions of recovery vehicles coming to the nearest access point from the pass and us planning another weekend to ride Penge....The two clever guys in the group assessed the problem and proceeded to get the bike running with jumper cables. I on the other hand, looked for the only spot of shade in the 34deg heat. Lets just say that my function in this group remains uncertain

So what was wrong

Japie and I stopped at the bottom of the climb before the last switchback to allow ourselves a clean run when Mark gets to the top. Mark seemed to have a good run (no surprises there, very little that he won’t get through or over on that 990) to the top and parked his bike to come and film us and take a few pics

This was the only part of Penge that had all three of us with our feet off the pegs to stay upright. Both Japie and I dropped our bikes navigating our way to that steep climb just before the switch back.

I was really angry at myself for dropping my bike on the final turn off the pass.

I fell about every 200m there on the pass just after you cross the big bridge over the river. If it was not for the encouragement of a fellow rider i would not have made it. Really tough, and i though i could pillion up there with my son on the back. Yet it seemed so easy for the others
