Thinking of selling m bike -'84 XT600 Tenere -Value?
« on: November 16, 2020, 11:57:53 am »
I did a full restore on this bike last year.  Now that the project is complete the bike is standing in my garage and not being ridden - my plan is to probably sell it and upgrade my Mountain Bike.

What selling price do you think will be fair?  Total cost to me was around R55 000.  I see that there is a restored one on Gumtree for R68 000 - this seems a bit optimistic!

Its a tough one because if you think you will get your money back on a restore it will always be optimistic, depending on weather or not you did all the work yourself or not

I just finished restoring a bike of mine and the total cost of just the restoration was about R30k but it took me just on 5 years doing it in my spare time and on the odd weekend, calling ion favours and trading brandy things like spray work.. if I took it to someone to do it would have cost R60k if not more and pushed the price over what it is worth restored..

IMO the age old saying of ' its value is what someone is willing to pay' applies

As in any industry the price depends on the market, at the moment we have a situation where people have less disposable income due to CV-19 so one would assume the market for these kinds of bikes is more limited and takes longer to sell, especially as someone doesnt want to mess up a restored bike, and, conversely, the prices of new bikes are getting so high that less and less people are buying new bikes.. this is pushing the prices of second hand bikes up. The more rare bikes are niche and will get higher prices although don't be in a hurry to find a buyer..

I must compliment you on what looks like a very nice and original restoration. Good job.

Beautiful, I love old Teneres. This type of bike is aimed at collectors or people who do retro rallies, guess the market is limited. The problem is that for 70-80k you can get a good 2nd hand thumper with modern tech.

Looking along the lines of a Trek 9.7 or Pyga Stage.

People (like me) don't give a crap about modern tech and would buy this any day if I had the money....

These bikes don't really have a market value, they have a buyers value. You ask what it is worth to you and see if there is a buyer.

 :drif:

I can recall we did a school holiday math camp (compulsory don't ask) in Pta back in '86 and one the lads rode a 600 Tenere to class and back... he could wheelie that thing all way down the parking lot no sweat... must have been 60-70m at least  ;D :thumleft:
