Solo Ou Ballie Trip - Cape to Bethlehem......??
« on: December 02, 2020, 07:19:35 am »
OK eks nie rerig 'n ou ballie nie maar die bike is - 84 Tenere 600. Eks nog jonk, my onderlyf is 18, kop is 20, midrif so omtrent 37, as jy die average vat is ek 25.

Looks like we sold a Hilux E/Cab to a Buyer in George yesterday.

On my way back from GP yesterday I got this idea in my head..........load the Ten on the Lux, deliver the Lux in George, and ride back to Bethlehem from there with the Ten, lekker rustige road trip to clean up my hard drive a bit, been a successful but VERY VERY long year for me, and I'm sure some of you guys can say the same.

And I guess I can still very much handle being on my own, I've done quite a few solo bike trips of 2/3 weeks in another lifetime.

I'm not geared for bike camping, so will stay in chalets etc etc.......I'm a light traveller, so just taking my onnie and sweetpakbroek and I'm sorted there.

My only issue........I dont want to get on any highways or busy tar roads AT ALL, so I'll have to take agterpaadjies from George through the Karoo.

..............Crazy Idea??

Ek het darem backup oral, pelle in Paarl, Plett, Keurbooms, Graaff Reinet, Colesberg, Bloem........as iets met die ou Ten of die Jongman ;D fout gaan, so not too worried about that.

Nog 'n probleempie - ek gaan sukkel om 'n pap tyre te fix/ruil.........maar vir 'n los 50 Randjies sal iemand my seker kan help.

Nice plan, even though it sounds like you haven't done this before.
My 2c.
Cent number 1. Get someone to show you how to fix a puncture before you go, and have those few tools with you. You can fix a puncture on your own in less time than you can walk to a farm in bike boots. And the knowledge will stay with you forever.
Cent number 2. Carry quite a bit of water. If something goes wrong, water is what will keep you alive.

Other than that, enjoy the ride.

Petri head a bit east initially and do Baviaans area....I have a BnB here in Grahamstown where you are welcome to overnight and a cold beer available :thumleft:

Thanks Leon - goeie raad.

Sal laat my latte my wys hoe werk die puncture ding - hulle fix alewig hulle offroads.

Now to get past the kids on this brilliant idea of mine.........they're always VERY worried about Pappa riding alone around town, never mind from George. Especially the boys.

My wife will be cool with it, she knows me since my solo biking days to Zim and Malawi etc etc.

Maar ja dit was 30 jaar terug........eks nie oud nie, maar ek dink mens moet dit net in gedagte hou.

Sit heavy duty tubes in beide wiele en jou banddruk minimum 1.8/1.6 bar voor/agter.

Bandregmaak ook nie my gunsteling tydverdryf nie.

Neem as back-up die ou tubes, patch en solution, tyre levers, asook iets soos Q20 om die band weer te laat opglip saam.

"Phone a friend" indien jy vashaak.

Do not overthink this too much....if you listen to the voices in your head, you might never do it
Plan your route roughly, post it here and ask contact numbers of WDs who live on/near the route who might assist in times of need
Phone or whatsapp a family member with your progress every hour (that way they know where you are travelling at all times)

Three possible things might happen:
Mechanical issues (a WD with a trailer or bakkie can/will assist)
Puncture (practise removing/fitting front and rear tyre in your garden a few times)
You crash (call for help on your phone...if network is available  :peepwall: or wait for the family member to whom you give updates to sound the alarm when you do not make contact at the designated time)

Take lots of photos and post a Ride Report  :deal: :deal:

And if you take up Edgy’s offer, he, or his neighbor Big Dom, can give you multiple options to get to the east free state from Grahamstown, on amazing dirt roads, via Winterberg and Stormberg, and NE Cape  areas. And if they don’t have time, I will ...

I've done George to Bhm many times over the past 20yrs with anything from a XT250 to a 800GSA. In fact, planning to do it on the 11th and 12th with the 850 and my boy on a 250 Gixxer - his first looong road-trip ... (BTW - that little GIXXER can cruise 130 all day long!!)

Taking the gravel route is very very long and left to right and back all the way with some tar bits, but nice if you have time.

My advice aim North east from George through Cradock, Hobhouse and so on... But as I've said, you need time with a thumper and being alone can get very lonely...
... and "man-up" and learn to fix a flat tyre!! :P

@XRRX

Thanks a MILL man......this WDF is just SO great!

Do you have a RR somewhere maybe, some more foudies maybe??

I'm particularly interested in what route you took, and how far towns etc etc are apart.

Another option is to ride back up to Bloem, and someone fetches me there - I then will have a day or 2 more in "nicer" (unknown?) surroundings

7 passes is a fantastic easy route and has some awesome places to stop for photos.  Biviaanskloof has to be done at some stage just to experience the beauty that still exsist in our country . You have a young man with to pick up the bike should you fall over when tired . Take advantage of the trip and enjoy yourself.
