Question about CO2 cartridges.

Anyone carry CO2 cartridges (bombs) with them on rides instead of a compressor? After being let down by a faulty compressor and fuses being blown, I've decided to try the simpler bomb and adapter route. I've bought a few 25g and some 16g cartridges, but how many would I need to use to get to about 2 bar for instance on a rear tyre from flat? Also, what is the best adapter to buy?

I've used this on the road with the assistance of a nice mountain bike (bicycle) pump

The small bomb get the wheel to around 1 bar (slightly over) and then it is surprisingly quick to get it to 2 bar with the bicycle pump

This was on a rear wheel (both times I used it) on a 1200GS

Dunno about the best adapter - I got one of these kits from Trac-Mac that had the plugs (snotstokke), 3 small CO2 bombs, a little blade, some solution and an adapter in it.

One thing is for sure - when you end up using a CO2 bomb NEVER let your bare skin touch the metal of the canister.
Get those with a little neoprene cover or use it with your motorcycle glove.

Use them for mountain biking, reckon the 16g won't go far. You would need a few 25g bombs.
For peace of mind deflate a tyre and  bomb it to see how many you need.  I would then carry twice as many bombs and a decent bicycle pump.

That sounds like a plan. Not going to waste time with the 16g cartridges. I bought some 25g at Flying Brick last week. Think I must get a few more for in case.

Good advice that.
Bombs can go quick, highly irritating but it's just how they work.

Now, who knows about a decent small bicycle pump?
Small = short so it'll fit into the tailbag.

I also use them on my bicycle and have them packed in the toolset for the GS. Haven't had to use them yet, but I carry 4 x 16g and 2 x 25g in the toolset.

On the bicycle, I can do two flat to 5bar (give or take) with 1 x 16g.

I use them.  Not sure if the current batch is 16 or 25.  Two bombs usually will get the tyre up to 2 bar which is good enough to get to a decent pump, but I am not normally more than 40 or 50 kays from a service station.

I have a 4oz paintball cylinder with adaptor. I also carry a handful of CO2 canisters and a small compressor. I’ll always use the compressor first.

Not a problem for many, but cartridges is a very expensive way to pump tyres. Throw in a unsuccessful repair, and you are out of cartridges in no time.

Electrical compressor are victim to all the nasties in our game, dust, water, vibration, heat, etc. Plus the damn things work with smoke.

The expense is relative. You can buy 10 x 16g cartridges for R110 @ Solomon's Cycles. That should give you 5 repairs give or take bar an unsuccessful repair attempt.

Disclaimer - I SELL Compressors (and CO2 bombs) for a living...

If you put a compressor 'pig tail' plug-point DIRECTLY onto the bikes battery (so, 'permanently'), then you bypass any/all of the bikes own fuses, and obviously on bikes like the bigger BMW bikes, you bypass the CANBUS system, too...

I've sold compressors for the last 10-odd years, and we carry four brands in stock (Moto Pressor + Desert Fox + TourMan + Metzler/BATT), and can count on one hand the number of compressors customers have had a problem with, they really do give VERY few problems, indeed...

(Note, not ALL our compressor have - or need - the 'pigtail', such as when using an after-market Cig socket, etc...)

We also sell a Motorcycle COMPACT foot pump, delivers great volume per action, etc.

CO2 bombs - whilst 16 gram useful for BICYCLES, we prefer and sell the 25 gram Motorcycle-friendly size, which is 50% larger/more air per bomb, which REDUCES the number of bombs you need to carry, which gives you the CHANCE of ONLY using a SINGLE bomb, in some cases....

As others have mentioned, be SURE to hold the bomb in a glove during use, otherwise the neoprene or grid-plastic cover, it just stops your thumb from adhering to the bomb - ouch!

CO2 cartridges offer a good backup for tyre/tube inflation but there are some caveats: 1. CO2 leaks out through rubber 11-12 x faster than N2 (78% in air) or O2, so deflation is comparatively rapid. 2. Whilst dry CO2 is inert, contact with any moisture forms corrosive carbonic acid which particularly enjoys eating valve stems (frequently allow ingress of moisture). To avoid these issues, use CO2 as a temporary fix, but replace with compressed air as soon as the opportunity arises 👍🏻

Basically, what Chris is saying, is that there are various options.  Each of us, puck one, or any combination and enjoy the ride.  Hopefully none of us will ever experience the possible failures of whatever we picked.

Has anyone ever tinkered with installing a valve and a piping system that can screw onto a Soda Stream CO2 bottle? That would do a good few fills.
