Interesting how the other bikes managed to complete the stage on water.

As they all drank from the same poisoned well

Was a bit of tongue in cheek.

Price's bike also sputtered but he managed

Also, it's one big-ass tanker that got contaminated, so all had water in their fuel. - or do you honestly think that some bloke added water to only certain containers before filling the bikes??

Broad stroke statements don't highlight facts.

Fact is, ktm enduro and mx bikes have the best clutches in the business.
That's been the case for over a decade now.

Fact is that Japs are now copying those clutch designs

People don't ride their flower smelling, poorly suspended, over weight Jap adventure bikes into the hardcore places.
Its mostly KTM adventure bikes that go there and if the rider can cope, so will the clutch - Seems like a pretty broad stroke statement to me  :pot: :pot:

Indeed, that last paragraph was not exactly factual

Yes, a very inexperienced rider thrown into very difficult terrain, with the bike as victim. But these youngsters are gutsy as hell.

Rufus, one of the trio told me just now that the bike may also have been geared up for road cruising by previous owner.

Haha

For the record, I love Yamaha, Honda and Ktm equally.
That being said, I dislike the 790 for its looks, the T7 for its price and 450L for its performance
:)

"KTM 690 airlifted out of Swartberg"

If (IF!) that is true then perhaps a contributing factor may (may!) be that the 690 Enduro (was it an Enduro? But anyway, the SM has the same, ditto the 701) has a too-high first gear (KTM's standard-practice inheritance btw) compliments of the 690 Duke - which was (and always is!) first released.
That leaves a few KTM Enduro bikes with a road-rated first gear, hardly ideal, and is a most pronounced shortcoming on the 690 bikes!
To combat this I've shortened the overall gearing on my 701, it helps a bit... but is hardly ideal.

He also says that, unless you abuse it trying to get out of a mud hole, you'll never use it up. In other words, if you never use it hard, it will last long. :imaposer:

Look, the clutches on the 300, and as far as i know, the full offroad range, is tough. The 690 clutch take no abuse kindly, and the internet is full of 790 clutch issues.

I am sure Cele organised the airlift. The KTM was having too much fun in the river.

Dan, I HATE to say it but you're correct.... dammit  :-[
But, eh, you see, there's no stopping clumsy idjits lacking even a smidgen of mechanical sympathy to buy a KTM, would be, eh, well, racist maybe?
I mean that word is used for everything these days....

On the other hand, expert riders like myself can put 40 000 kms on a 701 without clutch trouble.

How much power does the 690 produce again??

If some folks cant mange all that hp properly, they should scale down to a Jap offering; their clutches are happy with the 50% less load.

*this excludes the great XRR. A bike pioneered by a racing legend. Reluctantly built by the Japs and replaced by soft-cock offerings for those, "ready to slip the clutch" people
