A friend recently told me about someone working on a starter system, where the engine stops in a certain position, with piston just after top dead center, and a amount of gas is injected into the cylinder

while it is fired by the spark plug.  This will obviously force the piston down like in the normal process, and the next revolution will be the normal running of the engine after it has been started.

What I cannot figure out, is how the piston will always stop in this position.  If this problem can be overcome, it is the most brilliant idea in years, simple start the engine with what is there already,

fuel and spark!
