Roadbook training course with Willem Avenant

3 days of roadbook riding in the Great Karoo.
Roadbook riding for those who know roadbooks and training/learning for those who want to get to know the ropes and see what its all about.

Come and get yourself and your bike ready for Kalahari or Tankwa without the pressure of a high paced event. Or just come use your rally bike for what it is made to do.

From Willem Avenant-After the recent rains the Great Karoo is looking amazing. I am adding some really special sections to the route with some tricky navigation and some interesting hill climbs 😉 Had a great scouting mission today.

The longest stage will be around 450km with fast flowing liaison style Karoo roads, covering 3 provinces in 1 day(Eastern, Western and Northen Cape), passing through the legendary Karoo town of Nieu-Bethesda and then circumnavigating the highest point in South Africa outside the Drakensberg massif, Kompasberg.

From there the route will go through several private game reserves and then pass through private farms with lots of tricky navigation that will require your full attention.

Update from Willem galivanting in the vlaktes
One of the things I love about roadbook riding is that it takes us to truly unique, wonderfull and inaccessible places.  It truly encompasses everything about adventure for me.  Working on a very special river bed section.

Ryan Hawker from Durban does a u tube  rally build on his ktm450 with ultimate goal of doing the Kalahari 1000 but will be joining Willem as well. Ryan coolcat laid back durban man of note- quite interesting

Update

Its been a super busy week, I finally scouted  all the specials!!!  We have some monster routes planned, and with some bakkies joining, I made a special stage to include some HP (now OP), for both bakkies and bikes.

It is turning more into a rally emulation than a roadbook camp, as we will have live tracking, allotted start times, Control and De-Control Zones, Speed Zones, etc... Only difference between this and a real rally will be the speed.

We will have quite a few Dakar 2022 hopefulls joining us, as well as trying out/using some electronic roadbook setups, that we are still putting together.

If you are planning to join us, please make sure you get your entry in ASAP, as we have limited space.

After the success of our roadbook training camp last year, we decided to kick things up a notch and host a roadbook riding camp this year, that will in fact be a rally simulation.

We will have all the aspects of a rally, such as a bivouac, liaisons, specials, time cards, WPMs, WPEs, live tracking, etc, but without the racing.

Why no racing? To create an environment where you can learn how to use your roadbook and fine tune your navigation skills without the stress and pressure of a high paced event!

The roadbooks will be difficult in order to get real life rally navigation experience.

Over 3 days we will have several stages, covering a wide variety of terrain, from river beds to mountain tops, to fast flowing wide open Karoo roads to tight and twisty farm tracks, to off track (OP) navigation section. Perfect training for the Tankwa or Kalahari Rally.

We have *limited space and entries close mid March*, if you are interested, drop me a pm, and I will forward you all the relevant info.

We will have a few Dakar 2022 hopefuls joining us as well.

Will there be any HP stuff on the course?

Thanks for sharing, this was one event I was really looking forward to. Sadly I had bike issues which saw my bike in pieces for a few weeks , so had to miss it.

I hope there will be another one
