Back Roads to Gauteng & Augrabies a quick 3600km Round trip
« on: February 16, 2021, 09:36:07 am »
A Note: I did post on the WD FB page so if you saw this there.....you may want to scroll on by.....
Any way....
My mate Rod needed to go up to Gauteng to see family.....It was a good idea to see mine too......so I suggested we do some back roads , as he tends to do the shortest route up the N1 ........and me not so much........this is how it went....
......because Rod had work commitments we left early on Saturday morning as it was going to be a long day from Cape Town to Ceres then gravel roads to Sutherland then Frasersburg and finally Carnarvon for the evening

This was the first days route

Road To Sutherland........ it took us a while and Rodney needed to get his teeth into the washes and sand roads...not something he does every day.....however we made a steady pace and it was hot ....... we arrived in Sutherland around lunch time......first time for him to the little town

I took a lot of footage with my Gopro  which im still to download .......but anyway the ride from Sutherland to Frasersburg and Carnarvon was fairly long and much faster due to less mountain range and river washes with twists and turns.....we got to Carnarvon late afternoon to find that the old Carnarvon Hotel is now locked up and for sale......I normally stayed here ....and we even had an old years bash here once ......sad sight to see how the town has gone down since my last visit.....
Luckily we found a guest house to share and at R300 per person it wasnt too bad......

Thanks to Eskom we had two power outages that evening.......the Karoo heat while trying to get a nights rest is another thing

Anyway we had a great meal at a place in town called Lord Kitchen

Next Day we went from Carnarvon to Vosburg then Britstown Deaar Phillipstown up to see the Vander Kloof Dam in flood and then Orania all of which these towns never before seen by Rod

The Road between Carnarvon and Vosburg was very quiet and we had been made aware of the swarms of locusts along the way.......i had never seen such a thing it was as if the road was alive.....unfortunately only have gopro footage of this

This is Day 2 Route

I must say Vander Kloof Dam was worth the detour and to see the water thundering over was a sight to see.......It showed off the true might of the Orange river

As one can imagine you cannot be so close to Orania to not go check it out especially if never been before like Rod.......

So i took him to go see what the folks of Orania are up to....

The little town was clean and tidy and the best place to visit is the waterfront lodge which we did.....

there was something relaxing about the place and we enjoyed cold local made beer and the friendly hospitality

your rr are literally the best, you are a lucky man seeing this country in a whole new way. very envious.

the scenery is also mindblowing but what really blew my mind is that the ktm hasnt needed to stop for a 'rest' as yet  :peepwall:

By the time we had finished having fun in Orania it was already after 4pm and we were still miles away from Gauteng.......maybe our relaxed Capetonian attitudes who knows

however the realization that Rod had to attend a mid morning meeting on Monday prompted us to split at this point.......Rod would pick up the main Road to Hopetown and Kimberly to see how far he could get...... and i wasn't going to chase up to Gauteng as there was no reason for me to rush into the rat race...

It was at this point I headed for the gravel roads to Koffiefontein and Rod headed for the fastest route to Jhb

So for me it was  over the Orange and dirt road to Koffiefontein

Next day i was keen to get away from Koffiefontein it was kind of depressing to be around this place.....

I really didn't want to go near the big towns and Bloemfontein was not an option so i was adamant to stick to some gravel roads.........

this was my Route to Dealesville from Koffiefontein
