701 tappet adjustment 2018
« on: May 22, 2021, 01:16:27 pm »
howdy all 701 dudes. I am needing to change the shims on the intake side. All the videos show u how, but for the older models.
With the double balancer it is a bit different. All i need is a guide line on how to strip the cam and all i need to do to get to the shims. There
is also a formula and will it work the same way. I am trying to get the repair manual but they keep sending me the owners manual.
No help at all. So if anyone can help me man i will buy u a bells please please please i havent riden in two weeks now and that is
not ok, really not ok.
Thanx a mill.

Correct, the 690 only this year got the '18-701 motor (dual balancer/74hp)..... actually strange but so be it.

Yes i really think that it is. As for the video i will keep on looking for it, but most are all about checking the values,
we need a little more info on the stripping part.

Send me your email and I'll send you copy of the 2017 manual.  This is the first year that the 701 got the new motor.

Think more than twice about the manual tensioner - it will wear the guides quickly. They need to be noisy when cold.

Where did you get shims BTW without buying a shitload?

Thanks - many dealers are not interested in selling one or a few.

If your cam chain was not noisy before you did the shims but is now noisy afterwards you may have done something wrong with the cam chain tensioner.  Best to check that first.  And I am with Big Dom, stick with the hydraulic cam chain tensioner.  They work well.  My feeling about changing those for the manual cam chain tensioners is that that is a solution for a problem that does not exist.
