Book value for bikes are typically based on about 10 000kms per year, but after 10 years it is becoming
very vague as you dont know how good the physical condition is of a bike. Individual bikes will attract different
values, depending on willing buyer/willing seller agreement

Ha ha, yeah Fuzz, I'm thinking about that 'cliff' specifically, I think the 890 could be the bike that does that to the 990, what could keep the 990 as a cliff-hanger is KTM's recent decision to start production in China, I see that the 490 and a few others will be made there as a start. I can't afford new bikes and don't want a 2nd hand one made in China...
I doubt that.
Until KTM releases an affordable bike that shares as much with the current Dakar bikes as the 990 did in its day, it won't happen.

Yup, many vehicles & bikes sell for way over "book value" insuring them is sometimes a issue, seeing as the insurers mostly insure only at retail + extras.

Some insurers will allow to insure at agreed value, however with conditions to that (need to get valuations etc)

I believe myself and @Operator  use such insurers to insure eg KTM 950 SE (current book value aprox R57k) for R100k +
Adventure bike and 4x4 insurance specialist.

bought my 2008 990R with 65k km on last year for R72k, after it was advertised at R88k.
I think that's a decent price and think whoever pays more than R110k for a 990 that is not in collectors-item-condition should cut back on the cool aid.

But its my opinion that other than the few outliers, that the 990 market actually fell in the last year already and its more realistic prices in general and that the 1190 market grew in value, that the sliding scale is making more sense again lately.

To me personally itís about value for money. To upgrade from a 990 is gonna be expensive.I tried everything in its price range, GS, Tiger, etc, all seems more like a downgrade. The 1190, newer GSís and AT is in a class of their own, leaning more towards the softer side of adventure riding....??So next in line is the 790/890, and I canít afford one of those.

A well maintained 990 with reasonable kilometers for sub R100k is money well spend👍
