Husky 701 broken top triple clamp.
« on: June 06, 2021, 08:58:13 pm »
A few years ago I had a big off with this bike, and the insurance replaced mirrors, tailpipe, and sidecover on the motorcycle.

Well, about a month ago I went on a NoneKing ride and up in Tzaneen my forks start leaking, and on the way back to Cape Town I stop in at Runner's Offroad cycles for fork servicing.

Starting to remove the righthand fork, the top triple clamp came undone on loosening the two pinchbolts.

Let BMW crimp it back on, they have the expertise and tools.

I bought a new one, and this morning I quickly wanted to fit this and go for a ride before MotoGP.

But goodness, what doI find? The centre bolt holding the clamp onto the stem is not coming loose.

This is what it came out looking like. :eek7: :eek7:

Really??? I regularly strip 40+ year old Jap bikes that have perfectly working screwthread all over. :xxbah:

The new clamp, and the broken-off piece of the old one.

The clamp cracking could be excused, the impact even broke both my super-strength femurs, but I am pissed-off about the too-lightly made aluminium bolt.

Sjoe, dunno if they just had too much loctite on that bolt? Did it strip on the way out? Or do you think it was stripped like that before?

How did you get home from the other side of the boerewors gordyn, with the broken clamp?

As nuts as it is seems sounds, and sorry for the pun, he rode it.
Worse, he did so in just over 1 day, from Boerewors to Wynlande.
Rumour has it he even overtook some BMWs however these may have been cars also.
It follows that one can only do this with a somewhat decent nut clamping the bars, but this, I am sorry to say, was not the case!
Steel gonads take on a new meaning here.... and on this Dan, may I suggest you have a SS Nut turned?
Some coppaslip will not go amiss here then too, ditto new Balls & Races for the neck - the bike's, thank the dog yours is fine still!  ;)

I remember Noneking also had a 701 with some factory flaw, swing arm ? Next time take that XT Dakar replica  :deal:
Luckily that nut cant be too expensive and the stem thread should be fine as it's proper steel ?

That 701 had no factory flaw.  It was the wrong installation of a spacer/bolt/thingymajingy on the swingarm.
It was replaced under warranty and I bought the bike just after that installation.................and now it is 3 years (and 25 000kms) later
and it is running 100%   :ricky:

The quality of that nut is just fine and the same as on all KTM enduro bikes and probably others as well. Some c@nt cross threaded it or tried to torque it without loosening the triple clamp or to the wrong spec. Further that top triple clamp failure is not unique and happened to others - not common but documented. Also probably due to over torqueing.

Perhaps the factory cross-threaded the bolt on assembly.

It is the first time it has been undone since new, and cross-threading it while removing it will be difficult.

I'd say wrong grade loctite on alloy/steel and this is the result.

Much like KTM rear wheel adjusters seizing in the swingarms.

Nothing on this bike has ever been "over-torqued".

All you okes can do is torque, torque, torque.  Is anything ever going to get done around here?  All torque and no action.

Not sure that this is galvanic corrosion like in rear wheel adjusters - looking at it again the stripping really does look like it is at the bottom of the pitch being the first threads in so my thinking is cross threaded. Of course if seized or locktited really vas one could strip off the threads taking it out. Whatever way it is FUBAR.

Re wheel adjuster bolts - part of the problem with them I discovered is they turn through into the swingarm cavity where they are inevitably exposed to moisture with water ingress common in swingarms and often no drainage out the bottom or plugged. The bolt ends then rust inside the swingarm and when backed out seize and often break off causing a major varkup. Been there, done that many years ago.  ::)

Same alu nut that tightens the front axle, which is also Alu into steel.

Been using them for years in many KTM's and never a single issue.
Probably some factory mishap and just KTM's luck that it would happen on ZA's own Caucasian-Japanese person.
