735000km on a Goldwing......
« on: July 04, 2021, 06:57:02 pm »
Just unbelievable. I though Helge Pederson was the record with 375000km on his 80 G/S.

Emilio Scotto is - on a Honda Goldwing. 735000 km. :eek7:

Petri, do yourself a favour and go to the Deneysville bike museum, there is a goldwing with over 1 million kms on the clock. Seem to recall that the owner and his dog went everywhere and some

Yes, that was Des Pistorius and his little dog. Apparently he had done over 1,3 million kilometres on that bike. We would often see him and his dog standing on the tank riding
around Durban.

Dog's name was Widget. After Des passed away his bike was donated to the museum. He was a well known face at bike rallies for many many years.

Yep, I was on a trip in the midlands where Des got his 1 million Km.
It had a bit of work on the engine and gearbox up until then, but maintenance rather than failures.
Alcohol is essentially nature’s Leatt Brace – with it, you might not be able to move worth sh*t, but you can take a slam or two and be no worse for the wear.

Apart from the mileage this chap's journey is an epic one of note. How awesome that Honda Japan refurbished his engine for him? Reading about his experiences makes one want to go, until you read about the cannibals, the gun fights, the jails, etc. What an experience.

Ja, and one can only wonder......we always think a 1250 GS or 1290 KT or ST etc etc are THE ultimate "adventurers" (and they very probably ARE), but there's this guy with a moerse heavy GW almost proving that "assumption" totally wrong.
Other side of the coin also true.........those Guys with the little 125cc bikes ALSO doing epic RTW trips.

If memory serves, that Goldwing had at least two engine overhauls.

This is, to me at least, a big problem when people claim huge kilos on any vehicle, but work has been done on it, outside maintenance.

You only count kilos until you have to open up an engine, then it starts all over.

Like local newspaper reporting on a taxi with 1.2 million kays on the clock, and then they happily state that it has had x amount of engines, x amount of transmission repairs, not even mentioning balljoints, etc.

Put your mind to it, forget about cost and you can keep a vehicle running forever.
