Ignoring a cracked rim.
« on: July 21, 2021, 06:38:08 pm »
When I was refurbishing the rims on my XT600, I had to replace the front as it had a 10mm crack starting from one side.

Yesterday, while making nonsense in the workshop, I heard a loud and sharp "TANG!" sound from somewhere inside a huge mountain of bike parts.

I found nothing, and this morning looking for a part, I saw this:

The "white" part is where it broke fresh, the dark short section is the old crack.

Damnit. I just bought a dirt bike and now this will haunt me till I sell it.

Very sobering thought that that could happen while riding... If it did that on a shelf.

No problem if it had a tyre on it would have been fine. The "band" would have held it together!!

Thats what happens when a 18 inch rim really badly wanted to be a 21 inch rim .  :thumleft:

Ive got the same situation on a RM85 front rim.  Took too long to refurbish the spokes and it popped at the jointing seam.  :patch:

My 1997 Triumph Tiger 900 Triple cracked along the centre of the rear rim - between the spokes.

Was on my way back from Tanzania(Zanzibar), so the trip from Lake Malawi to home was a rather nervous stretch.

Made it safe home though  :ricky:

Am I the only not too stressed?

I have had two bikes with cracked rims (both KTM's oops)

The tire keeps all of this in check, and the spokes keep tension, keeping the rim round.

The one bike I rode for five years and never fixed the cracked rim. Nothing bad ever happened in this time.

Korrek.... :thumleft:
