Market for high end helmets
« on: July 23, 2021, 09:43:28 am »
I strongly believe in buying a high end helmet. If I fall off, I want my pip protected.

My wife and I went to Meiringspoort end of Feb and she fell while carrying our helmets, I put in and insurance claim and they replaced our helmets in April with Shoei GT-Air 2s which in my opinion is the crème de la crème of helmets.

I'm trying to sell these R13 000 helmets, but I'm having absolutely zero interest.

WTF am I doing wrong? Am I asking too much for the helmets?

Second hand market for road helmets is limited in on here and on other platforms in my experience. Tried to sell our 2 Arai helmets for years. Never got any interest and eventually just kept them as spares.

Adv helmets sell like hot cake on the other hand and I’ve sold 5 or 6 on here within hours of placing ad.

Personally, I think your asking price still a bit high though. At roughly 72% of what you paid new, interest will be limited.

If you are selling both for R13k then sell them separately at R6500 each .

He’s asking R8k and to be fair, those are all overseas sites. Locally more like R11k

There is also a thing on premium used stuff (at least in my view) that if the buyer can afford 8, he can afford 11.
This means the gap between the new price vs the sale price must really open up to attract peple...ie you take a bigger hit.
Conversely on the budget side of the market, every R100 makes a difference.

As Noneking noted, road bike helmets are not going to sell that well on this site if indeed anywhere.
I paid a fraction of what my Arai RX7 GP was selling for new when I bought it off GT some years back. My Tx4 also bought used for less than half with not a scratch and it came with comms

Except my first Arai Tour Cross, all my Arais were bought 2nd hand, or rather little use.

I have two TX4s.

The orange one is Noneking's favourite. It's been around the block.

The "newest" TX4, which was in brand new condition, I paid only R 4.5k. Owner was desperate though. I paid the asking price. An FB sale.

In general, don't always expect fireworks with selling anything on WD, unless it's in high demand and well priced.

Regarding the helmets being offered here.

Try all available platforms to sell them. Broaden your prospective client base as much as possible. There are quite a few SA biker sites on FB.

And price them realistic.

Good luck with sale.

There's always an element of risk buying a used helmet, you don't know what has happened to it with the previous owner....So someone willing to spend more than say R7k on a lid may just then spend the little bit extra and get it new and bypass that risk.

Having said that it annoys the hell out of me that most of the helmets sitting on shelves in bike shops are already 2 or even 3 yrs old.   I ended up buying a KTM branded Shoei instead of the plain one I wanted, because they bring them in more regularly so are actually new when they get to you.

For exactly the reasons you state - we want to protect our heads!

Unfortunately though not everyone is honest and there are plenty who don't have the integrity to reveal flaws.  You don't know it the seller has less integrity than you and maybe dropped it.

It is not a kak reply. :snorting:
It is not my intention to fight with you. You asked a question. You got an answer.

What did you expect by using words like "WTF Im I doing wrong ?"

If you said from the beginning you are trying to sell it for R8500, you would've avoided confusion.
Your original post gave the idea, that you are trying to sell it for R 13000 each.

Hope you have success soon.

"High-end" products almost always take high-end knocks on selling.

Know this when you buy new.

Rule of thumb when it comes to second hand shit.

If it sells to quick you asked too little.
If it doesn't sell you are asking too much.

Its not rocket science.

A guy walked into a shop and bought an Arai for R13k.. wore it 3 times and could'nt get used to it.. I bought it off him for R6k after he spend a long time trying to sell it for what he paid.

That's the way it is sometimes

I don't get it though.. you had helmets and fell.. yes? so you claimed from insurance.

So the old helmets are trashed and you trying to sell the helmets you fell with. Or you keeping your old helmets and trying to sell the ones you got from insurance?

I'm no expert, but you should'nt be claiming on things you planning to sell.

I'm selling the new helmets. The old ones were returned.

If you want the whole story, here it is.

My son is afflicted with severe cerebral palsy, we put him in a home and they broke his leg in February last year. We pulled him out.
We put him in a home earlier this year for a week's respite and the fucks didn't feed him for 5 days.
My wife is pregnant now too.

I cannot in good conscience continue riding a motorbike and put both myself a risk (My wife and I ride together 90% of the time with her as pillion) when Rikus is at home and is at the mercy of heartless, ignorant bastards. Should we die, what'll happen to Rikus?

If I die or become severely injured as a result of the motorcycle, my wife is then stuck with 3 "babies".

I am 100% confident in my riding ability, but I cannot account for the external factors. I know some of you will throw your arms in the air and have a couple of retorts, but it is what it is. Should one be involved in an accident on a motorcycle, there's a bloody good chance of death or severe injury.

All of the above factors influenced my decision, which I did not take lightly.
