Honda crf 250L or Rally
« on: August 04, 2021, 05:04:12 pm »
Friend of mine is considering buying one.

Lets for a second say money is not the biggest denominator; which one is best?

Is the Rally really worth the extra bucks?

The plan is to do weekend riding mostly.

No go L. Rally looks nice but just more stuff to break.

I have a Rally and have nor ridden a L. Two things I would consider is the range difference caused by the fuel tank capacity difference- I work on 300 km max.  on a tank. I would prefer 350 km, L obviously is less. I ride hard. I know others might get a better range if you ride conservatively. Other issue is wind protection- Rally has a screen whereas the L does not. Screen is adequate, but could be better

L for sure. Obviously lighter , and its minimalism is more in keeping with the dirt-bike aesthetics of backcountry gravel.

I met a guy in the Baviaanskloof who had sourced a big tank which gave him a range of close to 500 kays, allowed him to dispense with the OEM tank/radiator shrouds, and he was still lighter than a Rally...

I think it is down to personal preference. I prefer the Rally. Lekker wind protection and it just looks so good.

What type of riding ? The open stuff plus commuting the Rally does do well, mine really impressed me at highway speeds. But if you are starting to bundu bash the screen and panels will take a beating.

No the type of riding would be gravel roads.

No bundu bashing.

Oh yeah I think the 250L also had no ABS ? That would be a plus, hated switching it off on the Rally ? I reckon he will be happy with either.

If he just wants to explore some gravel on a weekend, then the CRF250L is all the bike he will need
I have ridden mine on the freeway for 30 - 60km stretches and I did not experience a lot of buffeting
I wear ear plugs so wind noise does not bother me

I now have a KLX250 and a KLX450. They both return the same fuel consumption. I have horrible feeling that the 450 will blow up on me but it is lighter than the 250, much better suspension, much longer legs with the taller gearing that I've given it, much more relaxed on the road and as well as adventure it can mix it up with the enduro bike crowd although the taller gearing means I can't really run it down a steep down on the motor like I would in a 250. The FCR carb is great for popping over fallen trees which is a big thing here. Just saying, and for years I have been a great proponent of less is better.

The guys on the 300 2 strokes were quite good, the adventure bikers were a real Wally Circus

Personally I find myself in both camps. If I close the one eye I love the L; and closing the other eye the Rally looks gooood

What he said.  I also prefer the Rally.  In saying that, I took the wife's L through a section of Baviaans and was quite surprised how easy it handled the rough bits.   :patch:

The Rally is a pig in technical stuff, it might look good but show it deep sand and it’s not “250 light”
