Above the Law
« on: August 07, 2021, 02:21:34 pm »
This is my rant for the day … I know I am going to take a lot of abuse for this but anyway.

Today while riding down Sefako Makgatho Drive a group of bikes came past me. As we were approaching the toll gate to join the highway I noticed all of them heading towards the eTag lane. I myself ride with a eTag on my motorcycle. Next thing I see them entering the eTag lane however the boom did not open. I then realised what was about to happen. One by one they forced there way around the boom. I stopped just before the entrance into the eTag lane with cars queuing behind me as between 8 - 10 bikes proceeded to do this, the last of which was on a R1200GS Adventure Triple Black. As his bike was too large and had a top box fitted to it he damaged the boom.

I don’t get how some bikers have a complete disregard for the rules of the road and other road users.

What made me so upset is that people like this give bikers a bad name with our fellow car drivers. As the last biker left on the scene I took the brunt of the abuse from other drivers.

I tried to catch up with the group on the highway to show my displeasure with a sign or two, but most of them were too far ahead.

Some will say a little lawlessness is a good thing.

There does seem to be unfairness in the system. Bikes pay same as cars.

Remove the toll gates altogether and bump the licencing fees.
Life is just so much better when living in a country without a single toll gate.

I wonder which is the biggest theft: legalised highway robbery by the state or a few gatvol bikers slipping through a toll gate.

The motorists were just pissed off that their cars couldn't slip through.

When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty.

Remember that always and we may retain what's left of our individual liberties.

Yes sorry, taking exuberant tolls has nothing to do with the rules of the road.  Good for them. I do it too. Fuck tolls.

No, no, no. We in the rest of the country that don't have toll gates, definitely don't want increased license fees by sponsoring those that do have toll gates.

Yes, for that reason license fees differ between provinces

Toll roads were implemented in the previous regime. Ppl generally adhered to them.

But we digress. This is after all not jou ma.

Wrong forum for this subject but I do agree with you @AlexAndyG - it is deplorable behaviour especially considering that the culprits was also involved in causing property damage while showing their discontent with "the system", the one percenters with their triple black behemoths.
People say nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day. And doing nothing often leads to the very best kind of something.

urban tolls, i.e. e-tolls, I'll never pay - reasons have been explained years ago

The open road tolls I try to only pay around half of them..... my guess of what bikes should be paying

If not mistaken in Europe etc there is little or no toll for motorcycles.

Apparently to encourage people to ride more bikes, thus less traffic congestion an pollution.

The facts of the matter is that government is involved through ‘private’ ownership. We all know what this means.

There is no transparency ito ownership, profits, pricing, etc.

Its a cesspit and open to abuse and corruption. Fuck all tolls. They fuck us…

I rode the 990 through 4 EU counties and did not encounter a toll gate. Licensing fees for bikes are next to nothing so yes, a bike pays pretty much no 'tolls'

Yip
The most important thing (road maintenance) is only a byproduct  :eek7:

Additionally, the current system is totally skewed as only some roads will be maintained while the rest of the infrastructure falls apart along with their respective municipalities.

In WC we are lucky that the only tolls are at the tunnel which I will use when in a car , but never on a bike , then again DuToits kloof pass is a worthy detour . Sanral wanted to have tolls on the N1 and N2 a few years ago but it was opposed by the DA and citizens , since then nothing further has come of it .

When you have as many awesome mountain passes as we have then there is reason to have both , anyway some of the best dirt roads are on the other side of the mountains so it makes sense to include some of them on a Cederberg or Karoo ride , and there are no potholes
