In hindsight, I should have bought a 1090 last year - R169 000.............Could have fitted all the extras and still come in under R200 000.

Go for the 1290. It really is something special. If you ride a bike for the joy of riding it is unmatched.

Yes, like a superbike's power, it is addictive. But we are talking adventure riding and then I can only see the extra kilograms, and even the power, to be a real drag.

Your thoughts on the 1290? cant now remember if you had one or looking at buying one....the new 2021 blue model is a but steep for my allowed budget.

Monster bike. Iíve not spent enough time on it to give an informed decision. Felt big and heavy, preferred my 1090 at the time

Chicco we 2 totally different people, miles  apart in everything, except in owning a KTM 990 adventure. I decided I am too old, and needed to slow down and went for another type of bike altogether.

What I have learned, is get what really blows your hair back. If you feel you can handle the 1290 go for that. I think the 890 is great and if I go back to a KTM, then I shall go for the 890, but I am vertically challenged, and not that great a rider.  In a different life, there would be no way I wouldn't go for the (new)1290. Too much power is almost enough :ricky:

My view is that unless you are regularly doing some really hard offroad riding, the 1290 will be more comfortable and more fun most of the time. But I agree that if you find yourself not taking the more adventurous route because the bike is too heavy or difficult to handle, then it is the wrong choice.

I ride mostly tar and none of the big adv bikes are as much fun as the 1290 - very powerful!
I've taken the 890 for a spin, but was happy to ride home on my bike
If doing more adv riding, I suppose the 890 is an excellent bike

so if you already have a 1290 what will your 2nd bike be? 690?

Does it have to be KTM? If you already get your adrenaline fix from the 1290, then you can look at something capable and reliable (Japanese) for a second bike. I also have a Honda XR650L and reckon it's a good combo.

A 500 and then the 1290 becomes the 2nd bike.

if you are a multi-bike person, I wouldn't limit myself to KTM

I've had more than 1 bike and it's too much hassle for me
