 ::)

Yip - ever since, as a gangling pimply 16yo I got my '81 XR200R - my only brand new bike ever, one of the first Pro Links in the country, and started racing.

Having read Geoffry Moorhouse's The Fearful Void ('74) I was already, to put it mildly, Sahara "befok" and then this....

The 1982 Dakar rally, in it's 4th year, was won by Cyril Neveu on a modified XR500, the XR550 -  branded XL only for marketing reasons (the base is in effect a XR)

I still remember pulling the poster from a mag in the Vryheid CNA - we went there twice a year as it was the nearest dentist:

The engine was the XR500 but with 550 cm3 which developed around 45 HP, with some tricks to improve reliability, as the oil cooler located below the headlight.
At a 130kg dry (with 42l fuel capacity), it proved to enough to take the crown from the BMW R 80 G/S.

By now the popularity of the Dakar equaled that of many big races like the 24 Hour Le Man, the manufacturers got serious, the competition heated up and BMW returned in 1983 with an HPN R80, and dominated the race.

Honda, recognizing the marketing opportunity (Europe was rally crazy, and replicas sold like hotcakes) returned in '85 on a fact finding mission, went off and developed the NXR750.

Obviously at this, my testosterone and adrenal glands went into overdrive..  :P

Weighing in at 189 kg, the 75 hp, 6 Speed with 59l fuel capacity

They returned in '86, like they say, the rest was history.

Honda won the Dakar on their first outing, and dominated the race for the next 4 years, first Cyril Neveu ('86 and '87 NXR750), and then  Edi Orioli ('88 NXR800V), finally by the legendary  Gilles Lalay ('88 NXR800V)

In 1989, the rival manufacturers had built highly competitive machines to beat the NXR, which meant Honda had to step up - the modifications and updates to the NXR had made the '89 NXR the strongest ever and Honda was seeking a fourth victory.

Gilles Lalay who had been with the Honda squad form the beginning took the race with 30 minutes, after a fall and  being 53 minutes behind the race leader at one stage.

The later NXR800V

1989 Was also a year to be remembered for the Africa Twin, the commercial Honda inspired by the NXR, which entered the stock class and won the class title.

The Africa Twin also went on to win in 1990.

In case you are wondering, the below genuine '89 model sold for $32000.00 beginning of this year.

NXR Project was closed after Four consecutive victories, and delivering the African Twin to the rest of the mortal world.

As of now, I'm selected for bootcamp - part of the Legend
