Everyone must be real glad they are only doing front wheel punctures with those E09's... didn't see anyone in the group "course boned" enough to be able to break the bead on the rear :D

Ha! Round one of the tyre changes needed the Landcruiser to break the rear E09!

Boot camp is done. The hard part happens now. The haggling and arguing between 12 observers as to who will be the lucky 14.

Boot camp done and dusted - holding thumbs whilst waiting for results.

All contestants were put through their paces in a manner designed to take you out of your comfort zone  and gauging your reaction to these circumstances.

Special tests (theory testing general knowledge on our adventure world), practical tests like tyre changes (and yes @Noneking, including the rear) were interspersed with instruction on everything AT related - working the electronics from the dash, general mechanical service checks.

Instruction on medical, the focus being prepping and getting yourself through the Quest that is to be run through the harsh Northern Cape and Richtersveld during the hot month of November when the trails will be dry, loose and technical. Keeping in mind that this will happen with day time temperatures of 40+ and nighttime temperatures plummeting to close to zero, it is crucial.

And then of course there was the riding -  we had to practice teamwork getting rider and bike going on steep inclines. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, it was mostly the drill of doing it as the DCT, the correct use of traction control/throttle response sensor and the low down balance balance of the bike made taking of on the steepest section of the incline a none event - my experience is the the Honda just laughed it off, making the rider look good.

Individual riding included a sand section that had to be done slowly and under control - the sand was a tweespoor, deep, warm and churned up by the instructors.
The contestants were required to slalom over the middelmannetjie in order to avoid tree branches place over the track by the instructors.

The low down torque of the AT handled it without a whimper - even though the bike was sabotaged by the crew; the tyres was pumped rock hard to increase the level of difficulty.

On the rocky sections rider balance and control was tested, it was tight to the extent that riders had to duck overhanging rocks barely clearing the front cowl of the bike, sections so narrow that the rocks cleared the engine cases on both sides with a few centimeters.

The event was awesome, and the "gees" among the contestants made the intention of he crew "to take everybody out of their comfort zone" difficult.

I met riders from all seven provinces in South Africa (*hint* should you want to partake next year), made friends, and networked - it opened up a wide riding world to me that will last beyond the Quest....

all nice and dandy, but not getting close to this, riding the AT.

Well summed up Beserker.

Its going to be a tough decision for the instructors and crew.. there are some really strong riders & strong personalities with a good skillset up for contention to get through to the finals.. Nothing was just simple, everything came with a potential twist, the instructors have eyes in the back of their heads and miss nothing when it comes to your skills on a bike or your skills communicating in a group.  :laughing4:

Everyone working behind the scenes to make the bootcamp a success take a bow..  The food was great and the time management was excellent. there was a lot to get done in the 2 days preceding the individual interviews.

The Africa Twin DCT is a well balanced marvel of a creation. Honda has produced a superb bike.

I would HIGHLY recommend you get as much training in as possible.

The route is pretty hardcore.

Having ridden the route (on a lighter bike) and having been involved in the recce for the Quest, I would suggest taking Andrew`s  recommendation seriously.

I have not done the current route.   but as @Kamanya s partner in 2017 Quest,   I would take his advice seriously.     If he says the route is hardcore, I believe him.  :ricky:   Sand training is always a good idea. So take up the very kind offers above to go train in Atlantis.   its a opportunity I wish I had before quest.

Good luck to all the 28 semi finalists.       :thumleft:    I know the wait to hear who the final contestants will be can be agonizing.

I still have a wonderment about the utter fun and adventure that Honda are willing to put on. To put their money where their mouth is. Jeez, I get Goosebumps!
